Hi,

My first post here and it's about a router I don't even have yet :D

I've heard really good things about RMerlin's firmware for the RT series Asus routers, as well as the Asus routers themselves. I'm seriously considering the RT-AC66U as a replacement for a WRT54G-TM running DD-WRT (BG only).

Other than the standard features (guest ssid being one), I need OpenVPN support (which I understand RMerlin's firmware does really well) and NoCatSplash as a simple captive portal for the guest wifi.

So my questions is, is NoCatSplash (or similar running on the router box) available on the RT-AC66U with the enhanced firmware? If not, is it something that's planned in the next few months or so?

Thanks much.

No, there's not captive portal software in Asuswrt-Merlin. I currently don't have any plan to add one, but am not entirely ruling it out for the future. Current focus is more on the existing features (and issues) than the addition of new ones (features OR issues ;) )

You could buy the rt-n66u and flash it with dd-wrt if you wanted.

DD-WRT on the RT-N66U is a PITA, and can lead to a lot of issues, including bricking your router. Look at Tomato instead - I believe it does have NoCatSplash, and is a much safer bet.

Thanks much for your answers and RT-N66U/Tomato suggestions. I think I'll give that setup a try.

I'd love to see the NoCatSplash included in a future update...I hope it happens!

btw, love the Merlin software on my RT-AC66U!

Any change on the stance of captive portals? Is this something that is included, can be enabled, or can be loaded using scripts?

Thanks.

Interesting ...I wonder what people need this feature for. Pls enlighten me...

In my situation I have an IT contract to set up a storefront with a captive portal. All available solutions are software-as-service and cost a monthly fee and require registrations and headaches. DD-WRT allows NoCatSplash which doesn't require any service fees and functions unhindered without maintenance. DD-Wrt is not very stable on the Asus devices I had and would stop responding from time to time, similarly it did not take advantage of hardware acceleration the way that Asus WRT does and that meant slower speeds.

It would be excellent if this functionality was present within the very stable and well performing AsusWRT. This feature may be useless to most but it would be extremely useful to some. In my current situation, for example, I have no qualms paying $100+ just to have this functionality on one device and maintain the stability of AsusWRT rather than messing with DD-WRT/Tomato/etc.

I see. Thanks for the elaboration. I hope Merlin will hear your beacon.
