Question about netflix on devices

Say i want to block netflix on certain devices, via router would it be possible? if so who would gather it it not straight forward and simple thing to do.

Which would be impractical because netflix.com resolves to many different IP's and they change from minute to minute. So I think @tsunami2311 is out of luck.

Exactly, unless you were to dig in the ARIN database, and pull out every subnet owned by Netflix.

And I suspect things are about to become more complex as Netflix is now migrating to AWS.

I think you should be able to block it using dnsmasq. Here's a guide for dnsmasq. Add this to your dnsmasq

address=/netflix.com/192.168.1.1:8080

I can't say that'll work for you but it did for me when blocking certain sites on certain devices.

gather i just chance the ip to device i want to block? what if I want to do block via mac address?

No, the IP in question is the IP it's forwarded to, in that case the router so it's basically null. I haven't done this per device. Maybe someone else knows an alternative but if it's a PC, you can edit the hosts file and wouldn't have to mess with the router.

The problem with this is that you can't restrict it to individual clients. If you want to block it for everyone you might just as well use the URL filter in the GUI.

That works for SSL sites? I know my way does but I was told the GUI filtering didn't work with SSL sites. I never bothered to try it.

You're right, the URL filter only works with http not https. But when I checked the Netflix site it was only using http.

The vpn option might be the easiest

Although what is the reason for blocking? Something like the kids are watching netflix instead of homework? Hate to tell you, a bored kid is resourceful and will find a way or just turn to YouTube.

Killing wifi and restricting Internet to a desktop you can view might be only option. But that leads to cranky rebellion.

Netflix really needs a separate passwords since any guest using it can change and view each other's settings. That's my big frustration with it.

reason being certain people in this house DVR 8+ things day dont watch them and dont delete, cause there to busy VOD or NETFLIX on the dish hoppers3/joey system and in few months time said DVR will be full. there for i dont want netflix working on certian joeys. and these people that doing this are arnt computer inlinded to know how fix such thing, and i the only one with access to the router.

Never messed with VPN i will look into it and see how i can block, if blockable threw that works once if fiqure out how to set it up. i looked at few time but it never made sense to me to i general have disabled.

side question lets say this worked
agmoviecontrol.netflix.com / moviecontrol.netflix.com view url flitler would there be way to filter for specific mac address/ip instead on all things connected

Just in case I might one day need it, I searched and experimented a bit. I think the easiest way to do this is to sign up for an OpenDNS account and on the "content filtering" page just add netflix.com. Then on the router, you can use the DNS filter to select with IPs you want to use the Netflix-blocking DNS.

Edit: Just tried it and it works well enough for filtering devices. Just realized I had trollface on my error page. Still kept it for post-hipster ironic amusement for when I let my neighbor use my wifi but discouraged any torrent sites.

You have to go to OpenDNS.com and make an account, then you can configure what sites or content you want to block. When you do that, go to the router parental/dns filter and choose which MAC/IP you want to route through OpenDNS. Make sure the global filter is off.

i did that i set up netflix as block on opendns, with my modem/networks ip. and it does block it but block all with in my network, and when i set parnetal/dns filter to on and made global off, without even putting a mac/ip in filter yet it was still blocking all.
