Is there a home router which has a built in web content filtering which allows the admin to configure individual users to bypass the filters?

The closest thing I can find at the moment is the Draytek 2820 but this does not allow exclusions and has a pesky and expensive annual charge (£60/year!)

In a perfect world there would be a router out there which does the same kind of thing without a subscription service and has exclusions.

I have thought about using openDNS but based on a google search it seems the average teenager can usually find a way of bypassing it.

There are none with free content filters. If you want halfway decent content filters and don't want to build your own open source based solution, then you'll have to pay.

I thought that might be the case, thanks for your reply.

I'll have a search on here for people who have built their own solutions, I'm guessing in reality the subscription based options make economic sense if you factor in the cost of the hardware for a homebuild (and increased power consumption if its a PC based solution).

The routers I have found which run open source soft ware tend not to have this as an option

EDIT : Maybe I was wrong in the above statement - this might do it!

This supports DansGuardian which, from what I read, pretty much does exactly what i want. A suitable second hand router won't cost much or hopefully release 4 will support some current routers

Thanks, I have looked at openDNS and will probably use it until Ver 4 of packet protector is released as it will hopefully support some more up to date routers.

I don't want to replace my current router until I can get a decent one with gigabit LAN.

Open source content filtering

The open source firewall Untangle may do what you want. The lite version has very rich feature set but you would have to have a surplus Intel box to run it on.

I did some research, I think you can go with either of these solutions.

1.Opendns with default firmware or custom firmware
1A You will use opendns as your dns. Will block port 53 for all other pc on your network except the one which you will be using as admin.
1B You will follow the instructions http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/OpenDNS#Intercept_DNS_Port Again blocking the port.

2. DansGuardian with custom firmware.
2A Use DansGuardian with ddwrt
2B Use DansGuardian with openwrt

With custom firmware you can use both at the same time.
Both support a wide range of routers. Asus N-16 is decent router for running these. It has also got gigabit LAN. Also block the ports such as 9665.

Just wanted to say thanks for your post, very useful info. I will definitely be having a look at the N-16.
