I just setup an RT-AC66U router and now I can't login to the router. How do I reset the password and username? I held down the reset button for about 8 seconds, but that didn't do anything?

Hi,
Just reset your router to set it back to factory default values. You have back up for config setting to restore?

I just changed the admin password login recently and forgot the password now. How can I reset it to factory defaults and save the current configuration settings to restore? Please advise.

You can't (save current configuration settings).

Only thing you can do is press the reset button with a pin while powering up the router and start again.

(Curious, which router and firmware do you have running now)?

I would recommend you upgrade to a current version (many security fixes in the past few months). RMerlin firmware highly recommended.

When you're able to take the network offline for an hour or so, reset, upgrade the firmware, follow the links above to have the best chance of a glitch free experience and start configuring it from scratch.

I would recommend you use john9527's NVRAM Save/Restore utility to do your backups with (after all the above is completed and you have tested and are satisfied with the network performance). At the very least, you will have a text based (human readable) output of all your settings afterwards.
