OK. I found an open box special on NewEgg so I pulled the trigger and now own a RT-AC66U. I have had it up for almost two weeks and so far so good. The desktop right next to it has the new PCE-AC66 and the connection is fast at the 1300MBps limit both TX'ing and RX'ing. That system's Internet speed is remarkable as it also has a wired Ethernet connection to the router. However, the Internet performance is improved with the working 802.11AC. Now I haven't done any speed test except to run speedtest.net on the connection itself and the results are unchanged from my RT-N66U.
The RT-AC66U is performing on a par with the RT-N66U it replaced. Range is equal and the 5GHz performance seems better even on N-900 or N-450 adapters. The 2.4 GHz band performance though is comparable at best but for our needs it has been more than adequate. Overall, for $130 I would say the router was a steal although it only came with itself, the power supply and router stand. The original CD-ROM was MIA and I had to download and flash it from 3.0.0.4.220 to Merlin's 266.23b.
My question though is on firmware. Shibby has said that a version of his TomatoUSB is in the works but are there any other firmware alternatives out there? Do any support 802.11AC?
