Do we have Merlin spokesman here?

There is no scheduled release date for the next version yet since it's still in development. This is just a copy of the current version of the README - and not even an up-to-date one, since the latest version is still on my development machine.

Hopefully by the time .24 version is ready to be released the current Asus beta with updated wireless drivers will be stable and the "new" Merlin FW will have the udpated wireless drivers.

Is this firmware is based on brand new 3.0.0.4.321 Beta Firmware from asus.ru FTP server?

There's no source code available for build 321.

The version on which a firmware is based will always be reflected in the version. 3.0.0.4.266.24 code is based on 3.0.0.4.266. This can change at any point if Asus releases newer source code since build 24 is still not released.

From the sticky

Latest release: 3.0.0.4.266.23b

Based on the 3.0.0.4.264 source release from Asus

Am I missing something? So the .23b is based on the .266 or the .264?

I'm pretty sure that 266.23 firmware is based on .266 source *smile*.

266. I just forgot to update that line for 23b.

Development has slowed down lately because since the end of the Holidays I've been really busy with work. Things are still (slowly) progressing however.

Barring any issue arising during testing, the next release will bring a few system-level upgrades:

  • OpenVPN will be upgraded to 2.3.0. This might (in theory) add IPv6 support, however in my tests while I was able to have an IPv6 be assigned to the client, routing wasn't working at all. Unsure if it's just a configuration issue (the documentation for IPv6 and OpenVPN is still pretty scarce) or something else missing in the firmware. People who are more knowledgeable in OpenVPN will be able to experiment on their own there.
  • LZO upgraded to latest version (used for OpenVPN compression)
  • The mkfs and chkfs tools that used to be provided by Busybox have been replaced with replacements from e2fsprogs. Some people have reported random issues when using fsck on their drives, this should take care of it. The cost was about 300 KB of ROM space.
  • Busybox upgraded from 1.17.4 to 1.20.2. It seems that all patches applied by Asus came from the Oleg/WL500G project, so hopefully I should still have parity with the featureset of the heavily patched version Asus had been using. That one will require extensive testing however, so it's not guaranteed yet to remain in the final release if it turns out that some Asus patches are missing.

I have no ETA at this point about the next release. The coming week will be another pretty busy one for me at work, so it could be a week or two before I can have something ready for public testing.
