    Compact and expandability are really contradictions in terms to a certain extent. However if you want a more traditional form factor with something that is still small I'd consider Intel NUC or Dell USFF.

    To give this question a sensible answer it's probably worth discussing the various objectives. If pure routing performance is the desired improvement, then learning to incorporate Layer 3 switches within your network design and appropriate VLAN/subnet configuration is going to be important...
