    Compact and expandability are really contradictions in terms to a certain extent. However if you want a more traditional form factor with something that is still small I'd consider Intel NUC or Dell USFF.

For a domain environment the local Windows server would usually serve client DNS and then look up to a recursive DNS resolver e.g. Cisco Umbrella or Google for external domains.     To give this question a sensible answer it's probably worth discussing the various objectives. If pure routing performance is the desired improvement, then learning to incorporate Layer 3 switches within your network design and appropriate VLAN/subnet configuration is going to be important...
