Time to build another NAS from old+new parts

Pretty sure there is with the S5000 MB a connection for a SAS midplane, it is quite sweet, the LSI SAS1068e module. It does though require some wacky fob to allow for Raid, the performance is really good an native to VMWare. The Intel server using this MB itself is a PITA, with a custom PSU...

New Intel Atom S1200 series, with ECC support

Thanks for pointing this out, I too am interested in emerging MBs

Questions on a small, expandable NAS build

This is a popular myth promulgated by the uninformed, and it is Dead Wrong. In setting up FreeNAS steve exactly, I mean exactly, what arcane command syntax do I have to learn? It is set-up and administered through a web interface, a web interface that is orthogonal to your blessed synology...

    FreeNAS build, please critique

Dude, most excellent. I like the 6 drive SATA III MB, I don't think there is a intel based mITX MB that supports that yet. Good call on the NIC.

    10-bay low power, quiet nas

How soon we forget. The 20-Bay NAS (SAN/DAS) is Ol'Shuck. Built as a proof of concept. Media, it stores lots and lots of media, it will top out at over 50TB, when built it had around a 30TB capacity.

    New Build

Dual NIC is useful for aggregating your connections, or segmenting your network. When two gigabit connections are aggregated any single connection can't exceed the speed of a single NIC (1G), but the total amount of traffic is limited to twice that (2x1G) You'd need a switch that supports...

    New Build

UnRaid sounds like your choice. I am not a fan of WD, the 512E (emulating of a 512k block) creates problems in a bunch of places. And WD is not known as an upright straight player. But since there is like only 2 mass hard disk vendors now, I should get my mind right.

    New Build

An active project with ZFS. FreeNAS seems to have the momentum, and is relatively turn key. NexentaStor CE is the Dark horse (and size limited), but offers some great features that FreeNAS is just catching up to. There are other ZFS choices if you don't need a GUI. The focus on the slickness...

    New Build

Expandability and flexibility is where the commercial NASes fail, if you have the chops to put a NAS together, go for it. Stevech, is I swear to god a stealth rep for Synology, in each and every thread that someone posts to DIY he asks the same question, states the same opinion, and generally...

    10-bay low power, quiet nas

You didn't mention a budget. There are acoustic racks for mounting noisy servers, but I doubt you'll find anything below $600 dollars. If that price doesn't scare you away, take a look at: http://www.xrackpro.com/default.asp...

    Building a cloud

Did you check out building a seedbox? Much in the same arena. Many of the cloud providers offer a API to their service, you could write software that would appear to be all you, but when storing it would use a cloud provider.

    Building a cloud

Not nearly enough details to assist you. Need a better picture as to why you need to do this in-house, and what you already have in-house. Does your datacenter have the capacity to support that kind of operation? Amount of bandwidth? Need Encrypted volumes? One VPH per customer? How much...

Build Your Own Fibre Channel SAN

To accomplish what you are talking about you would need a LC fiber switch. One HBA per machine (3 total), all connecting to the switch. Remember with a SAN the client ( or in FC/iSCSI parlance, initiator) creates and manages the filesystem. Why use vmotion? Why not just do copying and cloning...

Build Your Own Fibre Channel SAN

Yes, you can use a fiber switch, I can't really recommend one, I don't have any experience using them. They are not cheap. The approach used in the article was peer-to-peer, using a DAS to front any disks. The initiator was the QLogic's, part of the driver / firmware software for the Fiber...

    Deciding Between Synology vs. QNAP

Wait a minute, just one minute! I'm the designated grumbly DIY naysayer around here, that's my job. Who let this guy in here? er, I might of said the same thing.... :)
