    HP Proliant MicroServer

It's a decent box, the one thing to be aware of is that it requires LFF (Low Form Factor) hdd's, at the moment I don't know how big they will go up to but I have 320's that are LFF. A thing to be aware of is that the cpu is fairly limiting (although for a NAS device not so much (it's an AMD...

Shocking performance of RAID 5 on Thecus N4100+ - migrate to Nvidia MediaShield?

TBH if I were you and you were going to rebuild the box into a working NAS\SAN device then I would look at a better controller (a dedicated card rather than onboard), I would also look at dedicated NAS\SAN software (OpenFiler, FreeNas or unRAID) instead of using a normal OS. And a +1 for...

Buffalo Terastation pro vs live in performance(transfer speed)

Buffalo say that the device is not user upgradable, even if it is a Pro 2, but it is. iSCSI is a network disk protocol (an alternative to FiberChannel and NFS), it's used with virtualisation platforms (VMware and Microsoft Virtualisation platforms offer support for iSCSI out of the box). It...

Can you add more drives using standard RAID?

Also to add to Tims post, during the rebuild process access to the array is denied, this can obviously lead to problems depending on the type of data and the required access. Usually you would add additional disks to an array and create them as an additional lun and present the new storage as...

Buffalo Terastation pro vs live in performance(transfer speed)

I have the Pro 2, I wouldn't mind getting the Pro 3 but only for the iSCSI features, but I have an Openfiler solution providing me with iSCSI luns atm.

Advice on network setup and NAS configuration

Personally speaking I would perhaps look at a WHS (Windows Home Server) implementation. It does pretty much everything you have asked for, I would also perhaps look at using something like Tversity as a transcoding option. I use a mix of PS3, WHS and Tversity at home (the Tversity box is...

Buffalo Terastation pro vs live in performance(transfer speed)

It takes at least the 1.5tb disks, I purchased a couple of the 1tb version (256gb disks), I have since updated both of them to 1.5tb disks without issue. When I need to I will be trying to update to 2tb disks but at the moment I don't have a need to update yet.
