    Century Link best modem

Friend just got Century Link high speed DSL, their modem/router stinks. Needs good recommendations for DSL modems. I tried looking around but they all seemed capped at 24mpbs/2mpbs which is odd. I have Cable and the modem choice is pretty easy for cable. Really need a good modem to suggest to...

    NAS with or without transcoding

I got the DS414, and four of the Hitachi NAS drives, 4TB each. Loving it so far, it's wired to my router, which is wired to a desktop there, is there a way to get that desktop to do transcoding on the fly or something? I think for most stuff it would just need to remux mkv to mp4 so my Lumia...

    DS414 vs DS415play

Yeah I think I should just go ahead and buy the DS414, I don't NEED transcoding, and the ARM cpu seems more than fine for what I need the thing to do. I'll select SHR-2 probably, so it'll just do an internal RAID 6. 4x4tb drives, thatll be good.

    DS414 vs DS415play

lol I don't. But I doubt it would change much, I trust Microsoft to a certain extent. But putting financial information online is definitely not super smart, though idk many people use online banking and tax stuff.

    DS414 vs DS415play

Makes sense. I don't think I'll do a time backup, isn't too useful for media. Most of my non media stuff is in OneDrive (Microsoft).

    DS414 vs DS415play

Wow very cool discussion, keep it coming! Yeah I mean evidently zfs and btrfs are superior, but it'll cost a lot more to build a small avoton based NAS, and unfortunately I can't afford that. I think RAID 6/SHR-2 is the way to go for me, that'll give me 3.6 TB to expand into until I upgrade to...

    DS414 vs DS415play

Not really in the context of a 4 bay nas, if 1 fails u lose nothing, even if you have three drives worth of data! If you were only referring to a two bay system, then I can see what you're getting at. Atm I'm leaning most towards the DS415play with 4x3TB Hitachi Drives, these ones...

    DS414 vs DS415play

That makes sense, I think I'm still leaning towards a 4 bay NAS though, the 6 TB drives out are very pricey, the cheapest being the WD RED at 300$, and that doesn't have a vibration detector thingy. And in a 2 bay NAS with 1 drive devoted to a backup of sorts, that only gives me an extra like...

    DS414 vs DS415play

Well SHR for a 2 bay, might as well go RAID 1 right? I toyed with just going for a 2 bay NAS, and just backing up on the USB drives. but then I have no in-NAS redundancy at all, it would be nice because I would save a lot of money by going DS2414play + 2x4TB drives and just relying on those USB...

    DS414 vs DS415play

Good question, so far I have two USB 3.0 WD external drives. One 3TB, One 4TB. So far they're both redundant save for the extra TB of stuff that the 3TB can't store. The plan is I get my 4 bay NAS. And I'll have about 4 TB~ on it right away. That 4TB will be backed up on the 4 TB I am...

    DS414 vs DS415play

So I want to centralize all my media in a NAS, using four of these HGST http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER 4TB drives. I've done some research and it seems Synology is the way to go for me, and they have robust Windows Phone support for their apps so that's a bonus The...

    DS414 vs DS415play

Yeah I hear you on the transcoding speed part, seems the QNAP one with the intel Celeron is a lot faster, but 200$ more. I don't even need real time transcoding, I do my watching on my gaming PC or Surface Pro hooked up to a TV or whatever. So the client devices do the grunt work with madvr etc...

    High End Router Recommendations?

He might as well get an AC router considering new devices support the standard. Conversely if there's a cost effective Wireless N option that has awesome range/reliability then that could be considered instead of shelling out 180$+ dollars.

    High End Router Recommendations?

Wait so it seems his current setup is an older arris modem connected to a weird Sprint Airvana thing. WTH? I hope he can emancipate himself from Sprint because I'd just throw that weird booster thing out and plug in a real router lol.
