    NAS for home use.

I have a Synology 212j that performs what you are describing. I stream to a LG TV and have quite a strong wireless connection to the TV. Most of my videos are 720p but I do have some 1080p mkv files that work without too much trouble. There are two issues I have identified with this setup...

Where are you located? If you happen to be in Canada I may be interested. Thanks, you can PM me if you don't want to post location publicly.

    Wanted: Managed Switch Recommendation

Thanks for the recommended models. I will probably defer my purchase decision until I know if the wife will allow any IT budget, or if all the money will go towards things that actually matter in a house

    Wanted: Managed Switch Recommendation

Two switches isn't a bad idea. I will already have a provided gateway device/router from the ISP, in theory this provides some separation of the two networks, but I really would like to have two VLANs to completely isolate them.

    Wanted: Managed Switch Recommendation

I will be moving into a larger house next month. One of the reasons for the new house is that it has a suite that I can rent out. I plan on offering internet as part of the suite rental but want to find a decent and affordable managed switch that I can segment the network with. My requirements...

Open WRT on TP Link WDR-3600

I finally upgraded my old NetGear Wireless G router to a dual band Wireless N router, the TPLink WDR-3600, and am not completely happy with the firmware on the router. Specifically the router seems to have a lot of lag and fails to load pages much more frequently than the old NetGear I had...

    Which model of Synology?

I second the 2-bay Synology over the 4-bay. My 212j is more than fast enough for backups and serving media to my HTPC. Be sure to compare prices with your local contact and NewEgg.

Roll my own NAS or go with Synology?

The biggest decision you need to make is, "How much time do I want to spend administering and configuring my NAS?" The Synology devices, though expensive, are very easy to use and have plugins that provide much more capability with minimal user effort. My DS-212j has been running for 60+ days...

    VPN Configuration using IPSec

If you are using the build in Microsoft VPN client the two subnets to need to be different. At least that is what an article you put together a few years ago says. From http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-howto/24429-howtoxpipsec?start=1

    VPN Configuration using IPSec

Thanks for the reply. The issue isn't that the VPN router doesn't support more than one tunnel, it is that every train has the same set of IP addresses for the internal portion of the train's LAN. If I open a tunnel to more than one train there will be an IP conflict, unless I am missing...

    VPN Configuration using IPSec

I am currently working on a project at work that involves placing a cellular modem and router on a train with the requirement that someone on a corporate network be able to connect to the train using an IPSec VPN connection. The device we have on the train will be configured to accept VPN...

    Build or Buy?

If you are doing this for a company I believe the best option is to buy. You do not want to be responsible for troubleshooting issues with hardware that you configured. It is much easier to have hardware that is already warranty supported and doesn't suck as much of your time.

QNAP 559 maxing out need to get larger drives

I just did a quick look at the QNP NAS user manual online and in the "RAID Management" section QNAP Turbo NAS User Manual are the following steps:

a Good NAS to stream movies

What devices are you trying to stream the MKV files to? Do you need the ability to transcode the files in real time? I had an older Iomega ix2-200 for quite a few years and found that it was always my PS3 that had the limited codec support, not the NAS.
