Hi guys!

I am looking to buy a storage solution for my home and since it is the first time I need some advice.

What I need:
- simple/easy solution for sharing files (90% movies) to my Dune Player.
- not interested in enterprise features (mail server, AD, Itunes etc.)
- it needs to have an FTP Client so I can download content from some FTP on the internet
- no important files will be stored so no backup is really needed but welcomed.

Should I go for a Synology (DS114 or DS214) or would a WD My Cloud be enough?

The most important is the FTP Client which I should be able to access from anywhere over the NAS interface.

Thanks!

Choose Synology or QNAP.
That's it.

I have a Synology and amongst its tools is a bittorrent client which is how most downloads are done. (I don't use it - I'm not a ripper).

FTP client on NAS... hmm, it would have to have, like bittorrent, a list of hosts and files that need to be downloaded on some schedule. I don't see that commonly done on PCs or NASes, vs. bittorrent. But maybe I just don't know what I don't know on such!

be sure to try the on-line demos at the two vendors above.

Thanks for your advice.

the main idea is I want to download from a Seedbox (over FTP) without my pc being involved.
Basically I want to remove my PC as a go-between between my seedbox and my NAS.

As far as I know Synology doesn't really have a proper FTP client (which is ridiculous for a NAS).

Any other ideas how I could transfer files from my FTP server to my NAS without using the PC?

thanks

Well I don't care about the FTP client anymore:).

Now my decision is only based on the the fact that I will 95% store movies/series on it which I will share over the network.
I use 2 Dune players in different rooms and would like to be able to stream 2 1080p movies at a time.

Which would you recommend?
Synology 214+ or the WD My Cloud EX2?

I don't care about backup.

Thanks

If QNAP is not a consideration, I would chose the 214+ from your choices.

QNAP would be also on the list. Just did my research on Synology as they have the better marketing I guess:). Also the interface seems better on the Synology.
Which QNAP would you recommend?

The QNAP TS-269L or QNAP TS-469L are better choices, if you can find them for sale still in your area.

The current model QNAP TS-431 is also a good choice and offers 4 bays for less cost than the Synology 214+ 2 bay model and with similar cpu performance.

The QNAP models I recommend the most though are Intel cpu based models with capabilities of expanding the RAM to 2, 3 or more gb's.

What kind of budget do you have for the bare NAS? I find that QNAP offers more and better hardware than any other option for a similar or lower price.
