I jumped the gun and got the 5104. I'm quite pleased with it so far.

I'm just trying to optimise the transfer rate at the moment.

I'm only managing 5-6mb/s over wifi. It should be much faster right? What settings should I be looking out for?

My router is an asus N66.

Also, what link agregation setting is best on the NAS?

Is that Mbits or MBytes/sec?

Aggregation helps only if you have multiple clients using the NAS heavily. It does not increase connection bandwidth for a single client.

Its MB/s on the activity. I think its megabytes. Its rather slow. Any advice regarding settings?
well 5MBytes/sec = about 40Mbps net yield (not WiFi connection speed) which is typical for 11n WiFi - depending on the range and signal strength at each end.

My desktop has an N300 adapter (connection speed 267mbps on status terminal). Although I don't expect to reach 300mbps, I'm hoping to reach at least 100mbps.

My PC is only 4-5 metres away from the router.

4 to 5 meters and how many walls or other obstacles in the way? Which N300 adaptor do you have and are the antennae in the optimum position to best utilize the signal?

Have you ensured that Jumbo frames settings are the same across all your devices on the network? Even though it shouldn't be affecting wireless transfers, it may be affecting the wired to wireless interactions.

A drawing of your setup (with 3D indicators) and with obstacles would help immensely here, but try these suggestions if possible.
  1. Place the router as physically centered to the area(s) you need coverage in
    1. Bias the 'centering' for more important areas or devices (such as your desktop, in this instance)
  2. Place the router at least 10 feet above ground (and not just above the floor) taking into consideration the following points
  3. Place the router in open air (not in the basement, a closet, or a cabinet) with at least 12 inches free from side, back walls and ceiling and up to 3 feet free in all dimensions, if possible
  4. Try different antennae orientations (the recommended '\ | /' if using on multiple floors or levels or '| | |' if using the router and clients on a single level

Also take care of the N300 adaptor's antennae if you can. Place them as high as possible and not hidden behind the computer as seen from the router.

In addition, try moving the router and / or the client a few feet back and forth in the rooms they are in. It is an eye-opener how just a few feet may influence the throughput quite drastically, depending on the environment.

ok I have a silly question which I can't solve for past 3 hours.

I am trying to do a folder synchronization from my PC to NAS. Finding it bit hard to do settings and asustor online help not really useful.

Basically using rsync. Once I try to setup, it says enter server address. What is the server address of my PC? I've tried locating the PC ip address via router but this address does not work.

Any help please.

Hang on... I thought asustor NAS supports folder synchronisation. How do I go about doing this direct from the NAS rather than installing a third party software? Or is it not possible at all even with synology, etc?

It does. But does the spec say it supports folder sync to everything?

If the sync feature works only to rsync devices, then you need rsync running on whatever the sync partner is.

Every device is different. You need to dig into the details.

Delta Copy is free and works well. I use it as part of our NAS benchmark suite.

Thanks for the advice. The router is <4m away from the PC just in the living room next door. I have tried all manner of positions and the result is still the same. max around 6Mb/sec.

I have a TPlink WDN4800 which is supposed to be a 450Mbps adapter. I've updated the drivers. I've chosen 5ghz network. No change in the transfer speeds.

This is getting rather frustrating.

Thanks for that! I will definitely give it a try.

I just bumped into bittorrent sync. Is this also another way of folder synchronisation? Would either of these be preferable?

Is the PC blocking the antennae from the router's line of sight? Have you verified the Jumbo Frame options on all your devices?

Have you tried simplifying your network for testing purposes and only powering on the two or three devices you are testing with? Again, with their settings all verified and at defaults?

This is frustrating, I agree. But take a methodical approach and the issue can be isolated and a solution can then be reached.

Oh; can you test a friends laptop or PC at your place and see if a different setup reacts the same?

I have a Asus 68U router which is Wireless AC with a Wireless AC laptop, connected at 866 Mbps (5ghz) - and I get 40-50 MB/s (Windows File Transfer) to the NAS & about 12MB/s from the NAS (Windows File Transfer).... but if I go into the webui and download files directly through my browser I get around 30MB/s
(MB = Megabytes.)

I doubt that's actually much use to you, but it's just proof the NAS is more than capable of pumping out the data.

Anyway, sorry I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm also a 5104T owner and I really like the NAS although I have had 2 'crash' issues in the couple of months I've owned it which I don't remember ever having with my very, very old Synology DS211j so it's still a work in progress and the mobile apps are a bit error-happy but it's nothing a round of updates can't fix.

With all that being said, I only stumbled upon this post because I have issues using my standalone xbmc box with my nas and I'm trying to figure out if its a network issue or nas issue - I don't want to pin the blame on either yet but if anyone else has a Asustor NAS with a seperate kodi/xbmc box it'd be great if they can let me know so I can bounce a few things off them.
(if my issue gets solved in the meantime, I'll be sure to edit/post back one way or the other)

One would hope that Asus would have better luck with their NAS boxen than their routers.

Router/AP's, if they crash, it's not a major deal, unplug and plug it back in, a bit of network disruption - having a NAS crash, well, that's a different animal - I know that smart folks always back up, but consider that many people back up to a NAS, just for that reason...

"work in progess..." is mighty forgiving of a NAS crash (twice, in your experience)...

You have a point, I'm a home user and it's just me - this nas is overkill for my needs so these 2 crashes are more an annoyance than an issue - but you are correct this nas is aimed at power user/business where a crash wouldn't be acceptable.
