Im looking for a low budget solution to VPN to a remote location that can only get internet via a cell modem. In particular a Verizon 4G LTE modem. I have not purchased a modem yet to put on my account since there are so many, I wanted to make sure to buy one compatible with the router.

So far my searched as turned up nothing short of $300.00 dollar and up, routers. Im looking for something in the $150 or less area. Covering both the cost of the modem and router.

I have tried taking my Asus RT-N66U with DD-WRT and connecting a modem to it, but had no success. My research doesn't show very good success with this method.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

I have used three different 4G mobile WiFi mobile hotspots connected to my N66U using a USB cable. Two were from ZTE and one from Samsung. Even though none of the hotspots were shown in the pull down list all the hotspots configured themselves automatically and worked. My carrier is T-Mobile. I am running Merlin's firmware ver .50.

I would suggest that you get a modem/ 4G Wifi hotspot from Verizon and test how it works. Most cell providers will let you try a device for 30 days and return it for no more than a restocking fee and paying for the data used.
