New Around Here
On Kickstarter someone has recently started a crowdfunding project for a security device that would bring Snort to home networks:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/itus/iguardian-the-home-internet-security-system
First of all I can find very little information about Snort. How useful would this be in my home network; would it really bring a significant improvement in terms of security?
And secondly, can it really be made as simple to use as they claim?

Opinions?

Excellent project, I will be sure a customer.

@jbreitwieser, thank you for jumping in. I've made a purchase on KS for one unit.

@thiggins, hopefully you and Jock can arrange to have a pre-production unit sent to you for testing and post a review. I'm looking forward to a simple, high(er) security appliance IDS/IPS for my home, and maybe small office.

SonicWalls (et.al.) are nice, but pricey and somewhat overkill for these applications.

About this iGuardian as i have used snort before (coming from smoothwall express and pfSense) and i could tweak the configuration as i wanted.

I guess it has to be a way to enter this box by putty/nano to adjust snort as you like.

Why i am asking about this is that snort do have some false/positive hits/rules wich do not fit into an private network.

For a corporate network it fits better with most of the rules i guess, they have more restrict rules.

Hi gaj46 and Tim,

Jock Breitwieser here - one of the co-founders of the startup that developed iGuardian.
Tim, you're correct: it's not easy to configure at all. I'll reach out separately and we'd be happy to continue the conversation, explain how we set everything up and provide details.

Here's the link for our Kickstarter campaign for initial overview: www.itusnetworks.com/kickstarter

Thanks!
Jock

Any updates of the status of iguardian and general availability? What's the expected throughput with full inspection?

Hi agilani,

Sorry for the late reply, the project is going very well. We've made a lot of enhancements to the product beyond the original Kickstarter concept. It's crunch time now as we expect to begin shipping out pre-orders in March. For the initial release we are targeting about 50Mbps of IPS inspected traffic. If interested you can still pre-order from our website.

Kind regards,
ITUS Networks
