So my Comcast line was down last night. I'm not sure if the problem is related by I just noticed it today after checking if my internet was back up. It is assigning me the wrong ip address. When I plug the modem directly into my computer, it assigns a proper Minnesota address. When I do it through the router, it gives me a New Jersey address.

Not sure what to do, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I doubt it is related.

What is telling you that the IP is in different locations?

IP geolocation is often very wrong.

Edit: Fixed grammar.

By me you mean your router is getting the IP address, not your computer right?

I assume your router is set to get it's IP address automatically (DHCP assigned).

If the IP address you get is not giving you Internet access, call Comcast support. You must be reaching the wrong DHCP server.
If it is giving you Internet access it may just be that Comcast has recently assigned that IP to your area.

Hi,
Personally, I don't care much what ip address ISP gives. As long as it works. I only care about DNS I am using
for speed gain. If you really don't like it, you can get fixed address for you by requesting. My local ISP charges
extra for that.

My internet IP is not the same as it used to be, geolocation doesn't matter but what does is that I am getting higher ping due to routing. I get 10ms from the server I normally ping located near me, but now I am getting ~30ms. So when I directly connect to the modem, I get 10ms and proper MN ip address. When I connect to router, I get ~30ms and out of state ip address.

My router is set to "Get Dynamically from ISP" I have talked to Comcast and what they told me is that the DHCP IP gets refreshed every week, so they told me to wait it out. I am just trying to understand how this could happen and if that is actually the problem. Btw, I talked to at least 5 different people with Comcast. It took 5 people to find someone competent that could speak English well so I don't really want to call them again unless I have to. However, I am not convinced that I should just sit around and wait for the problem to fix itself. That is why I am asking here.

I don't care either, but when I do an iplookup and it shows me out of state and I get 15-20 more ms, then I do care.

My ping to Google will change throughout the day. Usually it is 11ms, but occasionally it will get routed differently and be 17-20ms.

This is without any disconnects. I have the same IP for both of the above tests.

Maybe run some long-term traceroute/latency tests and gather enough good information to be able to take it to your ISP.

A lot of ISPs "remember" the last MAC address that was used and assign specific IPs to it. As your computer has a different MAC address than the router, the DHCP of the ISP gives it a different IP address. In the R7000 firmware, in Advanced -> Setup -> Internet Setup, you can at the bottom specify which MAC address the router should use/advertise. Try setting it to the MAC address of the computer you directly connect to the modem. See if that works for you

This worked, thanks! How does the router get that mac address though, maybe it happened after a firmware update? I miss the ASUS firmware but I do love this router.

it doesn't get anything, afaik. You just tell it "advertise this MAC address" and the router will do so, regardless if that MAC address exists or not on your network. If you're referring to why the router has a different MAC by default, then they all do. Every device has a unique MAC address
