Yea but using the applet with openvpn gives me 16mbps - i even tried several servers close to me.
Doing without and using OpenVPN client I got 43mbps ...

So confused what to do :(

I see. It depends, I personally value Astrill applet high especially thanks to selective routing. No idea why your speeds using OpenVPN on the applet differ so much with the Merlin's / Asus version, perhaps they are tweaked.

Thanks for the info mate - maybe I should just buy the damn RouterPro... problem solved and applet can be used with nice speeds :)

On the primary computer, I still run Astrill desktop app as I get the best speeds this way. Their desktop app is great too as you can simply route selected apps (e.g. browsers) via VPN.

Hi I have an Asus RT AC88u running Merlin i was able to installed the Astrill applet however every time I tried to connect to a server it just keeps trying to connect and it never does any suggestions?

Check with Astrill support. Perhaps your ISP is blocking their servers if you are in contry with high censorship policy?

No i don't think that the reason I had Astrill running perfectly on my Netgear router I just upgraded and I find myself with this problem; do I need Merlin on Asus router to run the Astrill applet? I was thinking maybe is messing with set up. Anyone have a suggestion?

Try using Astrill directly within Merlin's firmware. Easy to install by just uploading ovpn the file within Merlin. No need to install the Astrill app on the router. While the Astrill app has many nice features restarts and stability were less than perfect.

Running an Astrill client in Merlin is very stable. My VPN Client has been up for 59 days on my AC1900P without a restart or dropped connection. To me the stability trumps the reduced feature set when compared to the Astrill app.

Yes, how otherwise would you like to install Astrill applet on Asus router? Unless you use DD-WRT or Tomato... So you need Merlin FW & install Astrill applet via telnet/ssh.

In my experience, RouterPro (if you have this Astrill's add-on) is twice faster than using default OpenVPN config on the router.

I've had a few contacts with Astrill over the years for various reasons, and they came off as knowledgeable. If you are encountering any technical issue, don't hesitate to contact their technical support.

If you do this, can you use RouterPro, or are you limited to OpenVPN with Astrill?

I just converted over from DD-WRT on my AC66U and had issues installing the Astrill applet on the latest version 380.67. Telnet script just didn't seem to want to run. So I downgraded to 378.56_2 and was able to install it there no problem, via telnet.

Would like to run 380.xx but don't want to lose the RouterPro feature, any suggestions?

I also had issues installing and running the Astrill applet. I agree it had some great features but running Open VPN on Merlin gives you most of the functionality but it takes some time to learn how to set it up and it is stable. If Astrill would upgrade their applet and make it stable I would switch back.

Update - I was able to incrementally update to 380.67, and have the Astrill applet running, so far no issues. I unplugged everything from the AC66U except my LAN connection to the computer, and updated from 378.56_2 --> 380.57_0 and all was good after reboot. I did not clear the nvram or jffs, just flashed and all settings retained. Plugged WAN back in, internet OK (I was also getting this weird reject of the equipment from my ISP previously with the 380.xx versions, so I couldn't connect to the internet) and Astrill applet ran fine. Unplugged WAN, updated to 380.59_0, all good, so then I went through a rinse and repeat cycle, with every version (last version of each update, i.e. x_2 or _4 or _6). So far so good. Will watch for odd behavior, but it appears to be working as normal.
