my router is rt-ac87r with merlin 378.52_2.

5ghz wan and lan 1 port is down with a lot of error logs.

:(

This log has nothing to do with wifi. This indicates you have a device on your network trying to configure itself through BOOTP - probably a printer. Disable that protocol support on the device responsible for those requests.

I've had the exact same issue on my 87U with the exact same MAC address. If you do an OUI lookup on that MAC address, it's registered to Quantenna Communications, Inc. It looks to me like the Quantenna SoC sometimes tries to boot using that MAC address with BOOTP for some reason, and fails.

That's weird. I've never seen this happen here so far, and I have no idea how it could happen either.

It's pretty rare. I noticed only twice that my 5GHz radio was down, and both times my logs were flooded by that same message. A hard reboot cleared it up both times. I have no idea what caused the radio/SoC to go insane.

I had exactly the same issue yesterday - 5ghz down and a flooded log.. Restarting fixed it - also on 52_2

ok.. upgraded, so I will see if it happens again, but this is in the log just before the 5ghz goes down - not sure if its relevant

Apr 25 07:52:58 qtn: bootcfg.tgz exists

This is normal.

ok.. went to .53 and 5 mins ago.. same thing..

Apr 28 17:32:34 dnsmasq-dhcp[466]: BOOTP(br0) 00:26:86:00:00:00 no address configured

5GHz goes and LED goes out... any ideas at all ? I may do a reset and build again using .53

Try a factory default reset, followed by a complete power cycle (turn the router off for 1-2 minutes, then turn it back on).

If after that it still fails, I'd consider RMAing the device.

I've just got the same problem on 378.55. 5Ghz been down for a couple of days, not sure how long because the log is filled with those messages and the same MAC address. I've rebooted. let's see what happens. Had been up, flawlessly, for weeks prior to this problem. I've never seen this on 2 AC87-Us running 4950 for months, so I suspect this "maybe bug" was introduced after then, assuming it's not part of Merlin.

Edit: didn't you say that the Quantenna chip talks using a 169.254.*.* address. Maybe this is the Quantenna chip trying to re-establish itself???

Edit 2: Seems I was right! http://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ac87u-ap-mode-quantenna-weirdness.26396/#post-197492

Seeing more of these in the log after reboot now. Never noticed them before, not to say they weren't there. This time I see almost 3 minutes of BOOTP
Code:
Sep 18 15:49:05 dnsmasq-dhcp[683]: BOOTP(br0) 00:26:86:00:00:00 no address configured
Sep 18 15:49:06 dnsmasq-dhcp[683]: BOOTP(br0) 00:26:86:00:00:00 no address configured

Sep 18 15:49:17 dnsmasq-dhcp[683]: BOOTP(br0) 00:26:86:00:00:00 no address configured
...........
followed by (maybe related?)
Code:
Sep 18 15:51:42 kernel: br0: port 1(vlan1) neighbor 8000.38:2c:4a:ab:51:58 lost
Sep 18 15:51:42 kernel: br0: topology change detected, propagating
then no more BOOTP.

In this instance 5Ghz seems to have recovered. Truth is I do not know it had actually fallen over during those 3 mins, although it seems to the layman it's likely.

Actually no, probably unrelated. that was my AP falling over and rebooting (It's the AP's MAC and I verified in the APs log). Mind you previously the AP had been up for months, so maybe it is related, or maybe it just needed a reset???

Looks like there is a real "bug" here. We all have the same MAC address shown. Don't think this is one of our LAN devices. Quantenna seems the most likely. Sometimes, like for me yesterday, the 5Ghz network restarts successfuly. Sometimes not. I never saw it on my router or AP when running Asus firmware 4950. SO I think that either this is a new Asus/Quantenna bug, post 4950, or possibly, just possibly, a Merlin bug??

I agree, my 5 GHz did not recover by itself, I power cycled the router after four hours (when I saw the problem) and luckily it started working.

Perhaps I should replace this router before the warranty ends (it's 10 months old now), but what should I replace it with (AC3200 perhaps, but it has so many antennas..)?

The router should carry more than a year of warranty.

Asus has a few new routers coming before the end of the year, so if you are going to replace it, I suggest waiting to see what comes out. Should give you a broader choice of replacements if you intend to stick with Asus.

The router seems to have two years of warranty, so I could wait to replace it, but is it going to continue to be unreliable?
This is the question I have, and I do not like devices that are unreliable, especially network devices that makes my family irritated and me having to work with them repeatedly.

I have also had some issues with 2.4GHz network loosing speed and requiring a reboot of the router after 10-20 days.
A router with non functioning networks isn't very useful, is it? ;)

This Quantenna stuff seems to be of lemon material...

But thank you for your input, it is valued!

A radio randomly stopping functioning is most likely a hardware/design issue, and is unlikely to be resolved by a software update.
