New Around Here
Hi guys,
I have a PPPOE gigabit connection running trough a N66U. For the past year I've been on stock .374 and its been all good getting steady 850-950 Mbps down and 180-200 Mbps up. However recently I noticed a speed drop and while testing I noticed that I'm dropping to 75Mbps down/up. Reseting to router fixes the problem for a while but the issue keeps coming back. I have not made any changes to either Router or the networking environment.
Given that I am not a network guru like most of you guys any insight on why and how to fix the problem would be much appreciated.

GP.

I've been getting the same thing here on my N66U using the past couple firmware versions. I'm on 3.0.0.4.376.3861 right now, but considering moving over to Merlin to see if I gain any stability.

The RT-N66U has a maximum theorethical wireless speed of 450Mbps on either 2.4GHz or 5GHz, practical will be half of that.
850-950Mbps may only be reached through a router LAN port.

Is it your WAN speed or the wireless link speed playing up?
Connect a client (PC) wired to a router LAN port and repeat the speedtest.
If still low, connect a client (PC) wired to your modem and repeat the speedtest.
If still low contact your ISP.

If wired to the router the speedtest is satisfactory, use a program like InSSIDer to check the wireless environment.
For 2.4GHz select the least occupied channel out of 1, 6 or 11 and set the bandwidth to 20MHz.
For 5GHz select the least occupied channel out of 36, 40, 44 or 48.
Repeat the speedtest.

Switching to the latest Merlin build made a huge difference. I'm not sure if he's using an older wireless driver or what, but it fixed my issues.

@wouterv I've got my wireless networks setup on the best channels available. My issue isn't the wireless performance as a whole, it's that over time performance degrades to the point where HTTP requests begin to fail.

Unless an absolutely necessary security patch is released, I'll probably just stick with Merlin 378.53.
