I hooked up a TP-LINK TL-WPA4220KIT ADVANCED 300Mbps Universal WiFi Range Extender, Repeater, AV500 Powerline Edition, onto my ASUS (RT-AC68U) Wireless-AC1900 Dual-Band Gigabit Router.

I'm using 5GHz channel on the router. The TP-LINK only uses 2.4GHz. I want to use the same SSID on the TP-LINK so it can roam without me having to manually switch. So how will this work? Will my ipad/iphone switch to the TP-LINk 2.4GHz channel by themselves? What if I enable roaming assistant on the router?

Or am I better off keeping the TP-LINK with the different SSID for more control?

There is no correct answer. Roaming performance depends on the client. You'll need to try both ways and see what works for you.

I have an iPad air 2 and an iPhone 6. surely there is a constant with these devices and the result is well tested.

The constant is that testing for the environment it will be used in is necessary. General statements are just that; an indication of what 'should' happen.

Correct. All of my devices, including an iPad 2, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 roam well between my 3 access points. That said, your results may vary. could just be the layout of my house, the specific routers/router in AP mode that I am running, etc. It works well for me.
