I'm going to pair it with a WRT1900AC so I want to have a common feature set, that's why I'm honed in on the EA-series Smart Wi-Fi routers.

I'm looking at the EA6200 since it's the cheapest but wondering if there would be a reason to uplift to the EA6300 or EA6500.

EDIT: This is for coverage in my garage. EDIT #2: I intend to use the same SSID as I am using for the WRT1900AC so that my clients can roam to and from the garage/patio area. So I'm wondering if there are certain radio characteristics I should be looking for...

A refurbished EA6200 is only $40. The EA6300 is $45. To go up from there is more of a jump. The EA6400 is $55 and the EA6500 is $65.

I'm thinking the sweet spot is the EA6300, which could be wall mounted in my garage against the outside wall.

Remember that when you repurpose a router as AP, most of the features go away. So I'm not sure that a common feature set is important.

Seamless roaming depends more on client than AP. But if you wanted to lessen your chances of problems, I'd use the same router, or at least one using the same radio chipset. Problem is the WRT1900AC uses Marvell, which no other consumer router uses except for the WRT1200AC

Thanks.

It's not the same feature set so much as the same GUI, for familiarity's sake. I like the Smart Wifi interface and find it easy to configure and manage (if a little light in the feature department).

I might give the EA6200 a try - at $40, there's little risk. If I find out I need to try something else, I might take a look at the WRT1200AC.

ASUS sub-$60 WiFi routers.. I've found to be reliable. I use a dual-band. I don't pay the premium for 11ac as my wireless clients are handhelds. Desktops are wired.

That's kind of where I'm at. Don't really need AC, just want to have somewhat reliable network extension to the garage and the new patio we built just outside of it.

If you're just using it as an AP, the 6300 should be fine..

Is there a difference between the 6200 and the 6300? It looks like they are both 2x2 based on the same chipset?

For outdoor and detached garage, you should use an added access point, or IP over power line to the garage. Or outdoor access point (see Engenious brand on newegg.com)

It won't be outdoors. It will be mounted indoors but on the far outside wall of the garage.

And as stated in the OP, I intend to configure the router as an AP - it will be connected to the main router via Cat5e/Cat6.
