Hi,

Has anyone here encountered some performance problems when connecting a Macbook Air to the R7000?
My girlfriend's iPhone and my Android phone get significantly higher up and download speeds from the router compared to the Macbook Air.

While I haven't figured out how to test the download speed on the phone when downloading a file from the router, speedtest.net reports 90mbit download speed which is 10 from what I'm paying for. Same with my gf's iPhone. Her Macbook Air 11" and my 13" both report 50mbit on the 5ghz network and 10 on the 2.4. Even when copying a file from the USB on the router it's the exact same speeds.

However, when I restart the computers, it'll report the max speeds of 100mbit down, and 25up, for about 30 minutes or so. I have tried every trick on the net. Deleting cache files, plist files, adjusting settings and tweaking the router. All to no avail.

I understand that theoretical speeds don't mean much, but even though 50mbit is a decent download speed, the pages take forever to load and there is an ping time of 50-300ms.

Any advice anyone?

Start by disabling any power saving options in the affected devices.

After your own ISP speeds, downloads are usually constrained by the busyness of and bandwidth allocation policies of the server.

Have you tried one of the MacBooks via wired? Just to rule out something with the TCP/IP stack itself.

No. since neither have an ethernet plug. :/

But it has been a lot better since I downgraded the firmware. But now the PS4 keeps disconnecting on wired network and not the WLAN.....

Of course, doh! You need a dongle to use wired ethernet with them.

I did try it wired with an older Macbook Pro however, since you asked about it. I couldn't find any packet drops or anything like that. The pings always respond steadily and the various speedtests I've tried all show max speed.

Then again the PS4 is also wired and it doesn't explain what's going on with that. There isn't really a way to diagnose the Ps4 as far as I'm aware. Could of course be the Playstation Network that is unstable as usual. But these problems started after I downgraded the firmware.

So it seems to be like this:

Old firmware = max speed on all units and more stable speeds on Macbook Air
New firmware = Max speed on wired computers, unstable speeds on wi-fi and stable PS4 on wired network.

Unfortunately, I had a multitude of problems with the R7000 and ended up returning mine. It sounds like you might be in the same boat...

If I were you, I would consider flashing Vortex's RMerlin port or Shibby Tomato.

Kong's dd-wrt build 27085 is working really well for me on the R7000. Including IPv6...Here's where to get it:

There's also a new version of Shibby's tomato ARM due out on Saturday. And XVortex (RMerlin firmware on the R7000) keeps putting out new versions, as well, but I haven't been able to get IPv6 working on that one yet. Haven't tried the lastest XVortex, though.

I'm on Vortex/Merlin or XVortex/Merlin now and things actually frickn WORK!
The 5ghz channel seems to flux between 50 and 500mbps according to the Apple "monitor". Not sure why this is. I have turned off explicit beamforming etc. I guess now at least it explains why I was getting such different results. It simply can't keep a steady signal on the 5ghz network.

I'm thinking it has to be a hardware issue.

How far away from the router are you? And there's no obstructions between you and it?

FYI, those screenshots appear to be identical. Don't know if that was intended or not.

RogerSC: Is it working for you on the 5ghz band too? I don't quite get this. There are NO 5ghz networks in my area and there aren't too many 2.4ghz networks either.

On the Netgear firmware I was able to find the 5ghz network on my phone. Not anymore. The signal strength on the 5ghz network fluxes. Tried turning off all the extra stuff, tried all bands now, tried N only, AC, etc.... Nothing works. Even the signal strength has been tried. Nothing works.

No it was unintentional. Uploaded it twice it seems. I'm about 3 meters away. The end of my couch is blocking it. :) The 2.4 network works flawlessly now as opposed to the netgear fw.

RogerSC: I'm on the King firmware. The speeds are more stable now. But they peak at 174mbps. In various speedtests and copying from USB on router and between two computers (one wired - one wifi) over the 5ghz network, there are drops in download speed every 30 seconds or so. It drops and goes back up.

Doesn't seem to be a setting that allows for 200+ mbps downloads. 80+80 or 40+40, none.
