I had a rogue AP show up on my network this afternoon, SSID starting with "WB" and using an Azurewave chipset. Looking at the signal strength in inSSIDer, it was literally right next to me. I checked my phones and none of them were hotspot enabled.

Then it dawned on me - we had a brand new Tempur Pedic bed delivered this morning, complete with fancy adjustable base. I downloaded the owner's manual and sure enough, Tempur has decided to include a 2.4Ghz radio in all of their new adjustable bases to facilitate using a smart phone as a remote control for the bed.

By default, the radio is turned on in AP mode, broadcasting on channel 1. This allows a phone to connect directly to the bed but doesn't allow for internet access (obviously) from the bed or the phone. You can however in the Tempur smart phone app enable "home network mode" turning the bed into a client radio. Then you can control the bed from multiple phones or tablets.

@thiggins: Will you be reviewing beds soon? :)

Hi,
Is the bed FCC certified device?

Hi,
Is the bed FCC certified device?

The manual doesn't contain all the legal mumbo jumbo but it does say this:
  • 802.11b/g on 2.4GHz

  • UDP Port 50007 and TCP Port 2000 must be open

  • Encryption modes: none, WPA PSK, WPA2 PSK

    • The character “^” must not be used in the SSID or in the network’s encryption password

These manufacturers including wi-fi into every item under the sun is getting ridiculous!

Wonder how many people will get beds delivered, not bother to change the default password and next thing you know the pimply-faced kid next door decides to 'adjust' your sleeping position in the middle of the night or at some other inappropriate time!;)

That's precisely how I intend to use it. I can't wait to hear my wife yelling at me from the bedroom as I randomly adjust the bed from my phone in the living room while she's trying to watch TV. :p

I hope their WiFi does not have a motion sensor!

My buddy said they're using it for data gathering and analytics. Tempur wants to say that they're not just the best night's SLEEP in the business. ROFL

Because this will never be used for evil (please note, I have only used Apple/Fire TV phone remote apps or airplay a handful of times for evil purposes with my wife/children. My favorite is airplay and using it as a loudspeaker from my phone while in another room. "Son. Put down the yogart and step away from the fridge!")

Hehe... just like not wearing the FitBit from time to time - hmm.. pulse rate was high around 11PM for a half hour, wonder what that could be?

:D

Internet of Things - it's here - and the privacy/security concerns - well, we should be concerned, and have the ability to turn things off.

My wife setup her Samsung phone to control my TV - she shuts it off in the middle of my shows. So as far as I'm concerned, turn about is fair play. :D

Reminds me of a Jimmy Fallon Pro's & Con's segment about the release of the Apple watch.

"Pro - the Apple watch monitors arm movement in order to keep track of how many steps you've taken."
"Con - teenage boys walk A LOT"
