More info supposedly to come from Computex next week.

I can't see where the upside is for Synology on this...

Another surprise entry (not as much as Synology I must admit) from Computex in the router market: ASrock.

I wonder if either of them will have better luck than WD's own attempt at it (which WAS completely out of the left field, even tho it was actually developed by Alpha Networks, same company that develops the WDTV products for them).

It's a damn tough business with much lower margins than NAS companies are used to. I can't see it financing itself. So Synology would have to have some other goal than making money with it.

Some initial information has been posted since CeBit 2015.

Was surfing around and realised that Synology showcased a Wireless-AC router at CeBIT. Wireless specifications does not look too shabby. From one of the online pictures, it seems to suggest the Synology RT1900ac specifications as:

  • Dual-band (2.4GHz & 5GHz)
  • 3x3 MIMO streams up to 1.9 Gbps
  • Beamforming
  • Quality of Service
  • Runs Synology Router Manager (SRM) which looks pretty much like the DSM on its NAS
  • Have Package Center (Audio Station, Download Station, Media Server, etc.)

The SRM user interface is pretty refreshing. Looks very different from what we see from ASUS, D-Link, etc. ASUS and D-Link user interface are also going in the direction of touch-based but I think SRM took it further.

Think the Package Center is also a pretty interesting feature. Didn’t expect OEM to allow installation of applications onto router. Typically this feature is only available for third party firmwares where you install new packages via ipkg/opkg.

More images can be found here.

The router looks interesting right? Hopefully not too expensive.

PS: Found the pictures online. Yeah, not taken by me.

meh - wish them luck, but it's an uphill climb

Synology (and others) should probably stick to what they're best at - the tier 1's in the SOHO Router/AP market have scale and volume on their side along with Market Presence and shelf space...

Don't have to be an MBA to know that lower costs on the front end (scale) and more shelf space on the backend is a hard place to get into... nobody want's to repeat 3Dfx's mistake there... technology is cool, but retail is ruthless...

That's why a certain vendor went another path - making their own stores (and remarkably, they're now one of the higher revenue per sq foot in any market)...

It's kind of like Wall Street Journal vs. re/Code or gigaOM covering the tech business - and we know how that ended up (let's just say, re/code was just sold...same with gigaOM).

No upside for Synology or for the purchasers of this router either. At least not in the short term.

In 2020 I might look at their products. But at intro? Maybe a quick read, but my wallet is staying in my pocket.

well aside from the famous ones we already know a lot of other brands just cant seem to compete in terms of the value of the features. For the type of features and performance they provide its either overpriced or lacking.

Please do misunderstand my earlier comment - I didn't mean to dismiss the product or the vendor.

I think it's pretty cool that Synology jumps into the SOHO Router/AP pool, but it's a crowded market - maybe this is a harbinger of other moves... A testing of the waters so to speak...

Many times, esp. in consumer electronics, best way to enter into a new sector is to roll out a product, see what the reception is, and then pick up one of the weaker players to leverage into the distribution chain (e.g. the Book of Business)... and by doing that, can push additional product lines thru the same channels...

And to RMerlin's comment about the ASRock device - didn't ASUS spin off ASRock some time back? Maybe this is their way to have both a general purpose line, and then a "enthusiast" line - this could be a good thing perhaps...

Like 10 years ago. I think ASRock is owned by a holding company now...

I think they are 100% autonomous, I don't think there's any management link anymore between Asus and Asrock. Someone might correct me on this if I'm wrong.

No, I believe you are 100% correct.

You are indeed correct - but like all things in Taiwan industry, the relationships are fluid and very close. ASRock is owned by Petragon these days... and the chairmen of both of those companies were founders of ASUS...

The problem is not just in the Taiwan industry, it is a global problem.

A very eye opening piece.

That's one way of looking at things - and yes, I'm a bit libertarian in my views as well...

I was more considering how Asian business generally gets done - Keiretsu in Japan, Chaebol in South Korea, and we know that the same thing happens in China - consider the Formosa Plastics empire - Via, TSMC, FIC, HTC, and a lot more... in Taiwan, they tend to be more horizontal, e.g. "kigyo shudan" style.. (企業集団 ) and South Korea tends to be the same... but Seisan (生産系列 ), e.g. verticals can be found across the board...

Stay on topic, gentlemen, please.

True - there are times where we as a collective, and myself included, definitely go off the range...

At the same time, a lot of good discussion and information exchange - maybe consider an open-thread subforum over on the main General Forum (and perhap bump General back to the top where it used to be)...

This also allows mods to move threads/posts over to the open-chat, and keep the discussions more focused?

Thoughts?

There is already an "Other Discussions" Forum.
