Hi, I'm the random guy that answered your question on the Linksys forum. I don't know why either, but that's how the Linksys person that talked with me said to set the router up for maximum throughput when they sent me the router, and it worked for me, too. Part of the mystery of the WRT1900AC, if it works just do it *smile*.

I borrowed a friends Apple Airport Extreme AC this weekend to test along with the WRT1900AC and the Apple beats the WRT in my house for throughput, not for range as the WRT beats it by a bar in my harder to reach areas but the speed is better on the Extreme. Not sure what that's about.

Also for anyone that has a WRT1900AC what are your uptimes in a heavy wireless environment?

The WRT1900ac and AP Extreme are probably the best out there at the moment - they're a bit older, but the firmware is settled and they're pretty stable these days.

AP Extreme is a bit over aggressive/optimistic at WiFi data rates, so at range, it suffers a little bit. Generally though, the AP Extreme AC is a bit under-appreciated... most folks look to other vendors, mainly because of the Apple logo... the other downside perhaps is that they don't directly support uPNP, they do NAT-PMP, so for some consoles (XBox/Playstation), they're a bit more work to manually port forward things.

The WRT1900ac - firmware was pretty unstable up front, but Linksys has worked thru the issues, and recent builds are very solid - and it's got the best RF performance, IMHO, of any AC1900 class router, and for those that want to do SMB filesharing, it's one of the best...

I didn't seem to have any issues without the UPNP on the Xbox One and PS4 with the Apple Extreme, I am pretty lazy when it comes to port forwarding/triggering so that would definitely be a down side even though most people say to turn off UPNP.

One thing that I can't really test is stability over time, most of the routers that I have tried require reboots every 2-3 weeks, not sure how the WRT1900AC would hold out over time, the Extreme seems to be one of those devices that will go on forever without an issue, however its not trying to push the boundaries features wise.

Back on the WRT1900AC at the moment, I am finding a little more buffering with this router on videos, could be site related though.

I rebooted my router this morning after like 35 days. It was the only way I could get the one Windows Vista machine to connect after it lost power last night.

Slightly worrying as that has been my issue with iOS devices, different circumstances but losing the ability to reconnect. The Extreme is a ball ache when it comes to things like DHCP reservations, but now done its set and forget.

Which one was cheaper? Go with that one if all else was equal.

Apple £169
Linksys WRT1900 AC £200

Sort of feel like I will miss the stability of the Extreme if I keep the WRT1900AC, on the other hand though I will miss the range and features offered by the WRT1900AC, until it reboots or won't let an apple device connect and I will want the opposite.

I haven't had any issues with the WRT1900AC since the last firmware update. I've never had any issues with iOS devices, only Windows Vista and a couple of really old Nintendo Wii's.

In your case, I'd go with the Airport. That's a fairly large price delta.

It's been a close call but in the end I'm going to stick with the WRT1900AC, I would have to buy an extender to continue to use the Airport, my bathroom and sons bedroom can go down to one bar on the extreme as apples to the WRT1900AC that still has decent speeds in those locations.

Well, that's a fairly significant piece of info that you hadn't mentioned previously. :D

I had more of a chance to do some more extensive testing today with iPhones and iPads. I tend to lose a bar compared to the WRT1900AC with antennas optimised. The only way I can test is by using speedtest on the Apple devices which doesn't really seem that great a way to do things. The results aren't massively different, they both win or lose but going down to one bar on the extreme is a little worrying. To be honest I will probably regret either decision as nothing is perfect but that's life I suppose.

Just been reading that there is a Verison 2 of this product out, I have version one with the fan and slower processor, not that it really matters but do I have any recourse as a new buyer in getting them to supply with the latest version. Do you still think that the original verison will be as supported now the revision 2 is out?

They just released new firmware for the V1 in the last couple of days. I wouldn't worry about it.
