Well, practically speaking - put it back to mixed then... if it works, that pretty cool...
Yeah mixed is fine and I've moved it back just trying to figure out why

Hi, I'm the random guy that answered your question on the Linksys forum. I don't know why either, but that's how the Linksys person that talked with me said to set the router up for maximum throughput when they sent me the router, and it worked for me, too. Part of the mystery of the WRT1900AC, if it works just do it *smile*.
I borrowed a friends Apple Airport Extreme AC this weekend to test along with the WRT1900AC and the Apple beats the WRT in my house for throughput, not for range as the WRT beats it by a bar in my harder to reach areas but the speed is better on the Extreme. Not sure what that's about.
Also for anyone that has a WRT1900AC what are your uptimes in a heavy wireless environment?
The WRT1900ac and AP Extreme are probably the best out there at the moment - they're a bit older, but the firmware is settled and they're pretty stable these days.
AP Extreme is a bit over aggressive/optimistic at WiFi data rates, so at range, it suffers a little bit. Generally though, the AP Extreme AC is a bit under-appreciated... most folks look to other vendors, mainly because of the Apple logo... the other downside perhaps is that they don't directly support uPNP, they do NAT-PMP, so for some consoles (XBox/Playstation), they're a bit more work to manually port forward things.
The WRT1900ac - firmware was pretty unstable up front, but Linksys has worked thru the issues, and recent builds are very solid - and it's got the best RF performance, IMHO, of any AC1900 class router, and for those that want to do SMB filesharing, it's one of the best...
I rebooted my router this morning after like 35 days. It was the only way I could get the one Windows Vista machine to connect after it lost power last night.
Which one was cheaper? Go with that one if all else was equal.
I haven't had any issues with the WRT1900AC since the last firmware update. I've never had any issues with iOS devices, only Windows Vista and a couple of really old Nintendo Wii's.
In your case, I'd go with the Airport. That's a fairly large price delta.
Well, that's a fairly significant piece of info that you hadn't mentioned previously.
To be honest I will probably regret either decision as nothing is perfect but that's life I suppose.
I can totally sympathize. I suffer from OCD and I'm constantly re-examining my decisions and 2nd-guessing myself.
I don't.
