So with my 1750AC TP LINK Archer c7 I am getting 89mbps via speedtest and my technicolor tc8305 modem provided by xfinity.
After my xfinity died yesterday they gave me the technicolor. But, I want to buy a modem so I can stop renting. The speeds i have with xfinity are 50mbps Blast, as they call it. So, no idea why I am getting 89. Question though is the surfboard I found does 600mbps vs the the motorola 6141 which is 120mbps. Not sure all these numbers make sense. But if I am going to buy, I kinda want to know whats worth buying and sorta futurproofing myself. All my laptops use iNtel 7260 chips.

I elected to NOT buy a cable modem. My ISP (TimeWarner) is pre-disposed to billing for a trouble call when the modem is customer owned but on their approved list. Even if no billing, they love to have this "out". I buy my own WiFi router and don't take theirs.

If you must... The Arris cable modems are what I'd go for. DOCSIS 3 of course. Arris has been around quite a while and is a step above the consumer frey.

Check your cable modem signals: http://192.168.100.1
Downstream: 0dBmV +/- about 4dB. More positive is better.
Upstream: -45dBmV to 55dBmV. More negative is better. This number is controlled by the cable modem system head-end.

Speedtest as you may know varies by which host, time of day, etc.

600Mbps doesn't make sense... along with 80Mbps what speed are you paying for?

I guess what doesnt make sense is the advertised speed of the 6183 modem vs the 6141. But I am getting really numbers above what I pay for.
I figured buying my own is cheaper, especially if they are more reliable than xfinity. I think most xfinity gear is refurbed.

My Time Warner DOCSIS 3 is limited to 56MBps/5Mbps in their most costly offering.
Feeling pressure from FIOS, they are s-l-o-w-l-y doing a nationwide upgrade to 100 or 200Mbps. Still DOCSIS 3, just more streams.

Their TV and Internet is more expensive by far than others. But they have a monopoly in this market.
