I'm thinking about ditching this router. It's performance has been disappointing and neither the signal strength nor reliablity has improved over the Linksys that it replaced.

For instance this morning wifie reported that her iPhone could not find the 2.4 GHz signal. I called up the ASUS Utility on my desktop and the router config seemed to have been hosed. I had copied down the config setting so I was able to reset most of it and I took the opportunity to update the ID/passwords. .. just in case.
But I'd like to understand what happened. Is there a way to track down the changes that occurred?

I would agree with your initial reaction.

First, you may want to try resetting the router to factory defaults after loading the latest firmware available (and to be 100% sure, you might want to do this twice in a row).

I've had a few customers RT-AC66U's go belly up. Not recommending these anymore no matter the price point.

L&LD you are right on the money. I had to reset twice and then update the password/IDs 3 different times till they "took" _very_ annoying.
But sure would like to track down why the thing went wonky. Is ASUS QA/QC so poor that these lose their minds often?

Glad you got it to work for now.

Hope it lasts a good long time. :)

Here's an update.
We had so many problems with Internet access that I am ready to dump our ISP - Brighthouse Networks.
After 2 + weeks of up & down service BHN sent out a different crew that specializes in fixing "something" (we never did find out exactly what "it" was). During that process they replaced the drop from the pole across the street then underground to our house, a different route then before. I had to talk them into a new box on the outside wall though. They also put in a different amp/splitter in the garage.
About 2 weeks after that we had a storm and no Internet... again.
The following morning during a phone call to Tech Support I was told that their equipment couldn't communicate with our Modem (the only original item left!) to get it to reset. So could we get a new modem? Yes! That was Sunday, on Monday a tech brought out a new Modem. That was two weeks ago. We've had storms almost every night - and the Internet is still up.
