I cut a thin piece of black plastic and super glued to to my power switch.

I believe you can use any toothpick, it does not have be "mint" ;)

wouterv, in my case power switch is not the issue. i have been using the mains switch to power it on/off. the switch has never been touched, except till yesterday, when i pressed it on/off 10-15 times.

i guess some component inside it has gone kaput.
today i had a chat with the RMA person. he told me that in case there is a hardware issue then it wont be repaired. it would be replaced. i hope they send me a router which is as good as new. my router was in pristine condition :-|

Wow, so strange, it's June 17 and my ASUS RT-N66U had the exact same problem today. I took it apart right away to troubleshoot and found out the switch was the source of trouble. Since this is the first router I have ever owned that had a switch, it took no time to decide to hot wire it. I soldered a piece of wire across the pins and it's working as good as new!

my new ac68 the power switch isnt clean operating, there is resistance before it is in enough to turn on, which made me a few times not turn it on properly,.

I dont agree with having routers with no power switches tho, everything electrical should have a power button/switch, I have always felt routers that require the yanking of a power cord to turn off are just cheap.

Update: My router is since being lying at the service center under RMA. They told me that they have sent a mail to the concerned department but they have not yet replied. one thing is for sure, Asus after sales sucks!

I use special power bars with a switch on each outlet. I just wish that ASUS had used a better quality switch.

Update:
Guys good news. I am happy to share with you the fact that today i received the replacement and i was surprised to see that they have replaced it with a brand new, shiny sealed box of RT-N66U router! :)

3 cheers! thanks to everyone who shared their opinions.

Regards

I am having a similar problem. My N66U went stone-cold dead after 3 years of faithful service.

It seems I can revive it by holding in the power button, but as soon as I let go of the button, the router turns off again. The button will not stay depressed.

This is weird. The router lives in a closet and no one touched it. Has anyone heard of Death by Power Button before?

Yep. I posted just now under another thread/and you saw some replies already here...

Purchased 6/2/12. Power button dead 7/30/2015.

The toothpick has been inserted, wedged between circular button and the housing. The router is now functional.

I am, entertaining to figure out- about one month over the three years of my limited warranty. FAIL. :|
