Dear all.

After running 378.55 on my AC68U - my router began to have drop out of the 5GHz wireless.
Also - The Astrill VPN applet disapeared ( The Astril Icon ) still clickable, but no icon. Even though I reinstalled.
What I noticed also was a major drop on my download speed. I went from 50Mbps to aprox 15. My movies started to lag or pause .. never did that before.

What I did now was.. Trying to do a roll back to 378.52 and now I got full speed on my VPN and it all seems to be running much better again?

I could reroll for 378.55.0 to test again - but now all seems to be running so good again.

Anyone else encountered this issue?

I bought Astrill with RouterPro to get faster speeds - works perfectly... just not with the latest firmware :(

If you need any info ect.. just shout :) . I even made a ticket for Astrill since I find it odd that I had such a major speed drop. We tried to use several ports.. TCP vs UDP ect. Nothing worked.

Now I just got the idea - why not try to do a reroll for an "older" version - and it sorted it :)

Cheers

Did you do a full reset to factory defaults and then manually and minimally configure the router to secure it and connect to your ISP, after you flashed the latest firmware on it?

Out of curiosity, do you have Adaptive QoS enabled?

@L&LD no? Just did an upgrade as I always do :) no reset..ect..

@Skirk
Yes had that all the time.

But its not a problem with 378.52 - never been for me.

You were just lucky before then. A reset to factory defaults, done properly is recommended for this build.

Unplug all USB devices from the router.
Reboot.
Flash the latest firmware.
After it is complete and has rebooted, reset to factory defaults via the gui.
Configure the router manually and minimally to secure it and connect to your ISP (do not use a backup config file to restore your old settings).
Use a new ssid on both bands (or 'forget' the old network on each device and then re-associate each device you want to connect to your router).

You may want to use john9527's nvram save/restore utility to save some time setting up the router. At the very least, it will give you a text based output of the settings as they were for reference (which you can copy and paste later).

The advanced features you have enabled (like Adaptive QoS) may have had their underlying code changed for the new release, just like that may have changed for all the basic functions too. That is why a reset to factory defaults is recommended (each time, by me).

It's up to you, but staying on old firmware is not very forward thinking in the long term (security, feature and performance wise).

Hi L&LD

Thanks for the good explanation :)

I do agree that I should upgrade the firmware to keep it most secure ect. I might upgrade again soon.

Disabling the Adaptive Q0S, will it increase the routers overall performance ?

Gonna give it a go again then :)

I just need to see if my VPN drops - if it does - I need to reroll ^^ :)

Glad I can help.

Disabling QoS and comparing it to when it was enabled is the only way to know if one is better than the other for your uses. It may help VPN speeds though (I think).

Cheers L&LD .

Sometimes it can be hard to find good and qualified support - but this is perfect - long and understandable answers are always nice.

People in general in here are so polite - its just perfect :)

Im gonna try disable the QoS - dont use it anyways to be honest.. Only in the start so I could see how much Netflix my girlfriend is streaming :D hah.

Hi L&LD .

Now I really need your help.

I did as requested, the router changed the internal ip and ect.. I got it back to the original ip on my lan.

Now I want to connect via SSH to the asus router, ssh is enabled.

I need to install the astrill applet.

Now I get this:

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

@ WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! @

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING NASTY!

Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)!

It is also possible that a host key has just been changed.

The fingerprint for the RSA key sent by the remote host is

(HERE IS POSTED A LOONG MAC ADRESS - A CODE)

Please contact your system administrator.

Add correct host key in /Users/Tcg/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message.

Offending RSA key in /Users/Tcg/.ssh/known_hosts:5

RSA host key for 192.168.0.1 has changed and you have requested strict checking.

Host key verification failed.

How do I fix this? :( I can't access SSH on the router before the thing up there is fixed, but I dont know how to do this .

Cheers.

Update - I reinstalled the latest version - reset GUI - enabled the things I need ect.

Sorry to say it - but the last update reduce the overall download speed . I have tried it 3 times now with rollback - everytime I go back to an older version - my speed increases rapidly . Upgrading to the latest version swallows my download speed. I haven't done any changes - using the same settings as I have always done.

I can't use it - since I lose aprox 70-80% of my download speed - and that is without VPN enabled.

Did you test for the best channel to use? Do you specify a channel or leave it at Auto?

You might want to try hggomes firmware. A slight power boost may be all you need for your clients to have the latest router firmware and best speeds.

If I was in your situation, I would consider trying to find a replacement for Astrill and RouterPro instead.

Hi L&LD

Havent tried the channel yes. At the moment my download speed with vpn is 277Mbps :)

Gonna look more info this :) ty again.

Got it sorted mate - 20/40/80Mhz was it set up - I just went for 40Mhz no wifi drops since that..

Pure luck I guess?
