Hi everyone!

First of all, please excuse any misspellings, I´m still learning english.

I´m currently on my third AC-87U, the first two units had several problems. Unfortunately, this one doesn´t work properly as well. The problem is, from time to time, it seems that the router disconnects from the internet. Once I open the browser (on any kind of device), I just get the login screen for the router (it´s not possible to log in though). My PS4, for example, just shows an error message.

When I reboot the router, everything is back to normal.

I´m on Merlin 378.54_2, my Temps are (on idle): 49°C, 62°C, 77°C (2,4 Ghz, 5 Ghz, CPU). The problem was present with stock firmwares too.

I have other minor problems as well, but this one really annoys me. Is there any possible fix? I dont want to exchange the unit for the fourth time, I´d rather go for the AC3200 and try my luck (side question, are the temps better on AC3200?).

Thanks

First of all, welcome to the club of faulty RT-AC87Us :)

What kind of issues did your first 2 units had? Quantenna/5GHZ radio stop working?

About the WAN disconnects check on your Syslog for any disconnect messages. Your temperatures seem fine.

Yes, RT-AC3200 has better temperatures compared to RT-AC87U.

Thanks for your reply.

The first one was indeed failing on the 5 GHZ radio, the second one came with broken antennas. There were other problems too, but I cant really remember.

I will check the log as soon as it happens again.

My concern with the temperatures is mainly regarding the lifespan of the router. Do you think the lower temps justify the extra 100 €?
I´m not using more than 2 or 3 devices at a time, so I dont know if the AC 3200 is the right way to go for me.

Buy RT-AC68P :)

This model isnt available in my country. There's only AC68U in black and white. Since I wanted higher USB transfer speeds, I went with the AC87U.

hggomes, did you replace your ac87u with a ac68p and are you happy with the result?

No, i dont have RT-AC68P but its better deal if you ask me, incomparable better boot time (RT-AC87U it's slooooooooooooow), awesome USB transfer rates, better temperatures, lower price, same specs (CPU/Memory) and you will get rid of Quantenna problematic radio. :)

At the moment i have a brad new RT-AC87U (new HW revision) from RMA exchange, RT-AC3200 and RT-N18U, actually my main router.

So, if the only two options would be the AC87U and the AC3200, would you rather spend the extra cash or stick with the 87U? I want a router that lasts as long as possible.

Also, could you post your temperatures with the AC3200, please? I cant find details on that anywhere.

RT-AC3200 is too much expensive TBH, i wouldnt buy it unless you have a big number of clients on your network, otherwise it doesnt worth the money.

RT-AC3200 temperatures are usually 44-48º on 2.4ghz 50-53º on 5GHZ and 70-75º on the CPU.

Maybe its better to stick with RT-AC87U then.

Suggest posting serial numbers of VERIFIED faulty hardware: these faults are produced in batches and this is a good way to identify bad batches. Once a bad batch is found, Asus can correct.
