Hey Folks,
Costco carries the netgear ac1750 router at a very attractive price. This router happens to look a LOT like the nighthawk R7000. It (R6700) has a dual core 1Ghz processor which has peaked my interest. I am interested in installing tomato or dd-wrt on it to use openVPN feature.

Can anyone provide feedback if you have replaced the factory firmware on this router, which firmware did you install and what has been your experience so far ?

Any feedback about installing an alternative firmware would be very helpful.

Oh, I did read somewhere that there's a Kong beta firmware out there for this R6700 model, just looking for additional information to make sure it will work out for my needs.

thanks.

I know this is a special for Costco. There has only been one NG firmware release for this router. Can't comment on the 3rd party fw for it..

While Costco can get some special deals* - hell, they can get some awesome deals, this is one I'd probably pass on...

* example is a dell 3847 mini tower overpowered by a Core i7-4790 16GB/1GB w DVD/RW with Win7Pro and Win8Pro on disk for 500 bucks - odd box, as typically one doesn't find i7's in that machine...

This is exactly what worries me. This router (R6700) maybe a 'one off' production for Costco.

The price ($120) definitely makes you want to look into :).

My goal would be to run openVPN on it with two laptops connected to a NAS (sinology) through this router to transfer the files back and forth. I wouldn't be using this router as my primary.

CostCo can move a lot of product, so OEM's don't have a problem doing one-off's - many times it's just a model number spin or a unique SKU/PLU - this is so that stores like BestBuy and Fry's (and others) don't have to price match against costco...

If you can get the FCCID, this is more important, as it might line up against one of the non-Costco models...
