The first and most glaring issue would be the different number of antennas sticking at the back.

Yeah there's 4 at the back on both. AC3200 has the extra 2 on the side only

Wouldn't it be easier to get a large hobby box and mount it there...

I had the RT-AC87U and it was a good router speed and range wise but it jut ran way to hot for my liking. CPU was hitting 80 degrees most of the time and was very hard to cool down - and I knew it just wouldn't last long that hot. For the price you pay you want the router to last you. So I returned it and got the RT-AC3200. With a 120mm USB fan underneath this router runs nice and cool but the problem I have is the 2.4GHz band has issues where it slows down a hell of a lot even while running cool - and have to reboot to resolve. I just think the AC87U in the AC3200 would run a lot cooler and the end product will be a better router.

Sounds like too much work when a simple laptop cooler or fan takes care of the heat issue without the makeover. Or are you thinking Asus should retool.

Thing is with a laptop cooler underneath - there's not many gaps in the housing for air to pass through so your never really making the most of it - where as with the bottom casing on the AC3200 it is full of gaps for air to pass through.

Sorry, my laugh of the day, this morning. Good help to recover from hiking trip up 2200m above sea level fighting snow, rain, slush, cold wind over the week end. IMO, considering active cooling help might be better, easier solution than swapping router cases. Sounds like killing one bird with two stones, LOL!
