I just made the jump from 5134 to 9177.

What are peoples' thoughts on enabling;
-beamforming, both varieties
-all the optimization settings in the Professional menu like
--TX Bursting
--AMPDU aggregation
--ack suppression
--Turbo QAM

What about IGMP snooping? any use?

Any specifically for people with printers, particularly HP printers (8600 series is what I have), do you find that Xbox optimization or b/g protection help for keeping the printer in communication with the router and computers? I've had to reset regularly on 5134 to keep the printer in communication.

Also, how do people have their aerials configured?

Visually, like this

or something else?

I've found beamforming finally, at least, does no harm in this version. That is 5 ghz is stable with it on. I have not yet tested if I see improvements, but I'm leaving it on. I leave the rest as defaults. I set the antennas as in your second picture, since that is what ASUS recommends.

I found this user's guide to optimizing the 87u which, now with most of the bugs worked out, might actually be relevant. Note that his entry on "Optimize AMPDU Aggregation" is exactly backwards from the recommendation at his source link. You want to enable it if you are in a high-interference environment (and not unless you are in a high-interference environment as he says), but if you're in the woods like me, you can disable it for higher throughput.

I have an HP 8500 and while I see a "scan to computer" drop out notification on my PC pop up frequently, I never have an issue with scanning or printing over the network. I've had beamforming on for the last few firmwares and haven't had an issue, as far as I can tell.

\ | | / per the manual recommendation; this also forms the radio to cover both my media room (outer & inner antennae) and the basement (outer). Imagine a giant wireless donut on each one and you get a sense of where it'll cover in your home, bearing in mind your wall structure.

Yup, very, very dense urban San Francisco, there are more than 20 networks within range of home.

Cool, me too. I like when the manual works nicely

I once again had to restart my router as my Macbook Pro's 5GHz 802.11ac network connection speed dropped from 800-1000 MBit/s to somewhere around 13 (indicated both on the laptop and in the router GUI).

The router web interface was also slow before the router restart, but it was resolved by the restart too.

2 days 3 hours uptime before restart.

Looking for help bringing a 87U back to life. Updated to 3.0.0.4.378.9177 and after update was complete I got the message:

"Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh. Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-AC87U. To access the settings of RT-AC87U, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number."
Now, when rebooted, the furthest left (when looking at the unit) power light just flashes continuously at I'd say 3-4 flashes per second(fast?). No other lights are on except WAN and one LAN in position 2. All other lights off. Router does not provide internet to the sole client nor is the router GUI accessible.

I've tried every reset procedure with no success. Power off, Hold WPS button, turn on, continue holding button=no change. Power off, hold reset button, power on, hold 20 seconds=no change. Asus firmware restoration utility from section 5.2 of the manual says "the wireless router is not in rescue mode" after 30 seconds of counting. Also tried leave router on for 10 minutes then press+hold reset for 20 seconds=no change.

Any help would be appreciated.

I got the same message when I flashed to 9177. My wired connection eventually started and I was able to connect by wire and then the internet setup appeared. I reset by holding the reset button for 10 seconds. If you are still haveing trouble, try using the CD that came with the 87u and start from the disc and then go through the setup.

9177 seems to work better for the RT-AC87U and other devices EXCEPT EA-AC87 which now cannot connect to the RT-AC87U. I have reset the EA-AC87 and during setup I can see other 5 GHz network but not the one on RT-AC87U with 9177 - even though I currently have phones, computers etc. connected to this 5GHz network.

So Quantenna chipset and drivers are not compatible with themselves. And someone at Asus QA/Quantenna should at least have checked 9177 for compatibillity with the ONLY 4x4 adapter on the market. Especially when it is their own product.

I am ONLY getting Broadcom-based routers in the future. I have no trust in anything Quantenna-based any longer and I will return the EA-87 since it simply does not work anymore. Maybe they will fix it in a future update but I will not wait several months for another "maybe". And when the Broadcom wave 2 products hit the market it is bye-bye to RT-AC87U. I will most likely still buy an Asus product because routers like AC68U and N66U have been very good and I also think that QSR1000 is the reason why RT-AC87U is so bad.

Regarding reset, I've never been able to get the router to successfully reset using either the reset button on the back nor the WPS button. I highly recommend just using the software reset button in the router GUI, it seems to work very reliably compared to the physical button methods.

I still don't understand why the reset button can only be used to put the router into recovery mode. Why call it reset then? Why use the WPS button as a reset, it doesn't make any sense!

I'll be testing this firmware over the weekend. I'm still on 4950 so this will be a huge change I think.

Hi StormEffect,

Press and hold reset button or enter GUI to set factory default setting is the same.

Incoming connection for losses incurred ping
Ex) 0.1 to 0.9 percent or less

External computer →giga internet modem → rt-ac87u rounter icmp ping loss 0.1~0.9%

Ver, 9177 and 8715 and 9110

5Ghz seems much more stable for idevices with this version but had to reboot router on second day of use as iphone 6 dropped the connection. Would be interested in the reboot schedule option when available.

Also, getting this every hour in the log "kernel: br0: received packet on vlan1 with own address as source address"

My NAS is hooked up to my AC87 wired. Transferring from my PC to the NAS, wireless, is dreadful. Speeds are in BYTES.
Other than that, this firmware seems solid, but this is not good for transfers to NAS. 355 KB/s won't cut it on transfers.

Which NAS you have? Are you using any QoS or device priority config? I have a Sinology and a WD and seems fine.

Did you try forgetting the network on your iPhone and then reconnecting. My experience has been it's not the router, but the iPhone that's the problem.

My bad, it is the network drivers on my desktop from ASUS, not the router FW. Reverting back to old drivers increased the speed. Have a synology btw.

Yeah did that plus a full factory reset on the Router after the firmware
