Hello,
I've got an Asus AC66u running Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.376_3861 PPTP vpn server.
No encryption. Auto authentication,
Time warner 200Mb down 20Mb up.
At the external location I've got 12Mb download available but I only get 5Mb coming in from the vpn.

What is the bottle neck?
The Asus AC66u only has a single 600mhz cpu, would getting a newer router AC87 with a dual cpu help?
Thanks for your help.

Your bottleneck is running OpenVPN on a router, period... it will never have the performance of running OpenVPN on a desktop (perhaps unless you're still on Win95 on a Intel 486)

RT-AC68U is probably your best choice - it's a good dual-core ARM based router/AP, and if you're deep into the Asus platform, this would be the recommended one.

Really depends on what you're trying to do with VPN...

OpenVPN is secure and flexible, and fairly portable - the downside is that it's fairly slow and computationally intense...

If you're using VPN to geo-unlock, and don't really care, might consider using PPTP, as it's reasonably fast, while not being finance/HIPAA level secure, is secure enough without impacting performance, and still good enough to mask the netflix/bbc iplayer streams etc...
