Asus AC87u dropping out

After 2 weeks of trials I can report that nothing works:
Static IP does nothing.
Turning off Traffic analyzer statistics does nothing too.
So the problem is caused by something else...

Unfortunately I agree now, thought it was sorted after being up for 11 days since tuning off traffic analyser. Thing is I was away from home during that time with missus reporting back if it had crashed. As soon as I get back and start playing my ps4, boom router crashes, 5 restarts since Sunday evening. How the hell can my ps4 be causing this? Maybe the problem exists with certain devices? I don't know.

For what it's worth, I've also been having the 5Ghz channel drop regularly AND the wireless config screen getting screwed up on the router Setup screen, and I read on a Singapore forum that the problem is related to the Quantenna 5GHz chip overheating. Sounded reasonable, so I put the router on a wire rack with a fan on it, and since then have had no problems. This probably is also explained by it crashing while working hard, because it would generate more heat; and you probably find, as I did, that if you turn the router off and let it cool a bit, the 5GHz channel bounces back. Msg me if you want the reference to the other forum - it's not appropriate it to post it here. I'm on my second RT-AC87U, and ASUS online tech support (via the router) claim they have no idea what the problem is but have been sending be a new firmware build including betas every few days for the past couple of weeks, so they're frantically working on something. They replaced the first one after failing to fix it with firmware, and I'm about to throw the second one at them too. I think they know exactly what the problem is that so many are reporting, a hardware issue with Quantenna's QSR1000 Wave2 802.11ac chipset, but they're too scared to 'fess up in case it costs them in a flood of RMAs. It's VW all over again.

No. This has NOTHING to do with VW. VW had to do with cheating to bypass regulations, not with a hardware defect.
 
Sorry Merlin, but I beg to differ. VW knowingly put hardware in the cars which was not up to spec, and ASUS have knowingly persisted and denied that there is any problem with the Quantenna chipset which they have put in this router, when it is widely known now that it's the root cause of the problem. And the router, with a failing 5GHz channel among other issues, is therefore also not up to spec. The analogy holds true, even though it could be surmised that you're an ASUS fanboy who doesn't want to hear criticism of them.

And you are just picking the VW analogy because it's what you saw in the newspaper today.

If you really want to find an analogy to the VW case, it would be when Asus cheated on FCC tests with the RT-N66U a few years ago. This is exactly what VW did - cheated emission tests.

And the fanboy comment makes absolutely no sense when my point isn't about whether the RT-AC87U is a problem- device or not, but to say that you are comparing two completely different situations. I don't see a single line in my post that would defend Asus (and if you re-read it, you'll even see that I used the words "hardware defect" in reference to it).

So are we saying the 5ghz quantenna chipset is the problem for the ac87 locking up like this? Even tho I have it turned off?
Just seems strange it works for 11 day while I am away but locks up when I play my ps4. Perhaps the increase in network traffic.

I don't think that playing on the PS4 creates a lot of network traffic; at least not compared to using a VPN or streaming HD/4K videos. The chip seems to get quite warm (which is funny since it's clocked lower than the BCM chip AFAIK) and it's normal that processors can become unreliable under heat. If you want to be on the safe side, just use active cooling and don't overclock the router. If your wifi still drops out after this, you know that it wasn't caused by the chip. If it doesn't anymore then you can be sure that it had been caused be the high temperatures in the past.

Yeah good point as I do stream HD to all my TVs from a media server with no problems.
It isn't just the wifi dropping it is literally everything, wireless, wired, can't access router page from any device. Only cure is power cycle the router.
I don't do any over clocking but may just get a cooler and see if it helps.

I wouldn't resort to a cooler. Unless you are locking your router in an unventilated cupboard this just shouldn't be happening. I have 2 of these that work hard and I have never had the whole router lock up and now, on 9177, the 5Ghz radio never falls over either.

I would return it and try another. If it happens again I would get a refund and try another device. The ac88 should be available pretty soon!

Nope certainly not locked in a cupboard and has plenty of natural air circulation. I am on my second one now, 1st one had exactly the same problem. Have not tried the newest firmware from asus yet either as asus firmware does not support my broadbands authentication method, where as merlins does. Unless the new asus firmware does support MER authentication now. I may have a play around tonight see if I can get the 9177 working with my broadband.

The first Merlin beta using 9177 as the base is now out. You could give that a go. Or just hang on a little longer to see if the final 378.56 fixes things. The good news is the warranty is nice and long and a locking up router is a nice solid fault. I guess they might insist on you taking a third to try but after that I think you would be well within your rights to insist on a different model (depending what country you are in, I guess!).
 
Oh brilliant, never realised the beta was out already. Will certainly try this first and see how it goes.

If you haven't done so yet, try disabling NAT acceleration. There's a few ISPs that don't seem to work too well with it, and causes random crashes.
 
My RT-AC87R dropped 5GHz in *Access Point Only* mode, which means the problem persists even without any NAT or firewall features at all! Inside the network, the ISP becomes irrelevant, yet it still crashes. It all seems to come down to Quantenna, sorry to say.
