Anyone own this router? I'm looking for inputs... I don't trust reading Amazon reviews anymore.

I still own my WRT610N v1 which still works perfectly but was thinking about upgrading. Just like Tim, I think some of latest routers are a bit overkill so I was looking for a decent router at a great price.

I see a deal coming on the DIR-859 which I never heard of before this morning. Looks like it was introduced in July 2015 so it must have recent components and I think an AC1750 should be an improvement over my current one. What I like is it doesn't have all the bells and whistles found on many like the USB ports I don't need but still offers what's mostly required like of course dual bands, QoS, even have guests network (yay!), the new improved D-Link GUI and seems to have better antennas than traditional. I believe the missing USB port help lowering the cost of the router.

I wish Tim would have reviewed this unit but I guess I can safely assume it cannot perform worse than my current WRT610N, right? Unless I run into some weird problems like we can read from people seeking help on forums.

You don't know what you're missing if you don't know what you're missing.

D-Link, just say no.

huh? Can you please elaborate? You don't like D-Link?

I see only ASUS and Netgear have dedicated forums... with over 3600 posts you must know better than me. Amzing the fact you joined just 3 months after me and you managed to post close to 3600 more messages, wow.

Many on here seem not to like D-Link and avoid it. I personally never owned a D-Link product so I can't share my experience with it.

But, there's a reason why many on here recommend ASUS as first choice. Solid, feature-rich firmware, solid performance, very long support by ASUS, etc. I personally recommend ASUS and TP-Link routers as I have lots of experience with them and know what they can or can't do. Firmware-wise, you on't find anything better than ASUS stuff. TP-Link is my close second as they too offer the previously mentioned stuff. Try to avoid Netgear as their FW is rather (very) poor and they don't seem to want to fix very well knows issues with it, not even after long back and forth with their support line. Personal experience, so I gave up on them. My R7000 will be my last Netgear product for sure

I was also eyeing ASUS but I don't see a this year model in the AC1750/1900 without USB I don't need (to lower the price). I forgot to say the new D-Link GUI also more parental control than some other brands, dunno if ASUS is similar with on/off hours.

At this point I guess my best bet is to give it a go and see by myself and return the product if not satisfied. I just had hope someone else here already owns it but I guess for that I should have asked in the General and not in the Buying Advice where a new owner would prolly not look.

If you are happy with what you have, stay with it. You can't assume anything about router performance. An AC router can improve performance, even if you don't have AC devices. But they can also introduce incompatibilities that lead to intermittent disconnects and other problems.

You will find "never buy X" threads about any brand. That's the nature of the internet. D-Link certainly has its problems, but their products aren't as bad as others may say.

In the end, yes, buy and try is the only way to know for sure what works for you.

their products are as bad as others say. bad hardware (for a number of models) and firmware. Even their dumb switches arent as stable or reliable. I have used dlink before as where i come from they were used everywhere and i saw so many problems, security holes, backdoors, unreliable firmware and hardware (poor things for the ISP customers as they all get dlink by default and call for tech support to come over every month just to reset the router, difficult for them to switch routers because the ISP used vlans and IPTV so they wouldnt know how to set it up on a router), not to mention that the router and PPP account user and passwords can easily be gotten without having to login or authenticate, remote admin enabled by default with default settings. So basically dlink has done a horrible job but they are all around because their backdoor and secret remote admins are what ISPs and governments like.

When i went away i never used dlink and never had a single problem when i left things running as i switched to other brands.

D-link, I recall, also used to use hard-coded NTP servers in the past. Some years back, they used to hard-code an NTP address to some guy in The Netherlands. After a while, the guy got a huge bill from his ISP. After that, he found out that many D-Link routers have hard-coded his URL/IP of his NTP server. Eventually the issues was resolved, after a long convo between him and D-Link, which denied it had used his NTP for most of its routers, only giving in at the last minute (so to say).

I find such a thing to be real incompetence and somehow striking after I read it on wiki. Even though I don't and never had D-Link in my place, I'm too reluctant in recommending them (not just because of the above).

A DIR-655 served me well without problems for years.

A DIR-655 served me well without problems for years.

My daughter is still using the d-link DIR-655 that I got several years ago. She got it from me when she went to live in a apartment instead of a college dorm, and it has continued to work through several other apartments over the years.

However, not sure about the quality or lifetime of the newer ones. One hears a lot of anecdotes on the negative side, and not a lot of "I love my d-link" kind of postings.

I had the dlink 655, it was a decent router for myself. I have bought dlink gigabit 5-8 port switches without major issues other than one had a bad power supply. I believe most people feel Asus and Netgear have better support even if it's from 3rd parties.

I just bought the DIR-890L/R.
Not happy.

Started out with a not working router at all(FW 1.05). It connected via DHCP, but the line was very unstable, and ended up with internet broken Connection that wasnt able to fix, either med or the router itself.
Connected the old N66U and got the newest F/W. Updated with that FW(1.08) but it still didnt connect to the net. Tried Everything with no sucess, but after a few hours it suddenly connected( during this time i reconnected the old asus again twice without problem, each time i released the IP Before disconnecting), as I did the first time. So, finally it did at least work.

The old N66U (Merlin FW) seems to get to hot from time to time and then the WIFI gets real slow( the kids complaining all the time). But the old one, when rebooted made me get about 40-45mbit/s on speedtest(and other tests) on both 2.4 and 5Ghz band with mobile units like a Iphone 5S or 6S. This is still a old N-style router. Also have an old DIR655 on the upper flor used as an AP for range upstears. It gives about the same values in the tests.

This new very fancy DIR-890 spaceship looking piece only gives med about 22mbit/s on any of the tre nets. ( I have 100mbit fiber, and gets very steady/repeded 97-98mbit/s wired on speedtest.)
I tried to not use the smart connect and also use the same settings as "mr smallnetbuilder" in the test of the DIR-890. Doesnt change the low speed.
I live in a not heavily crowded block of houses, and using inSSIDer on my mac I can see(and set) the 2.4 band on the free corner with no other frequency close on. On the 5Ghz net, there in no other than the two from my DIR-890( as long as I keep the ASUS disconnected.

Any ideas ? I was thinking a Little bit about getting a newer ASUS( AC-68?), but the N66U never actually did any good on the wifi side, except for the first months. Didnt wanna pay Money to ASUS to get me antother stinkin router with bad FW.

I live in europé and found the US FW for 1.08, might try that but otherwise im out of ideas.

the problem with dlink isnt just the quality of hardware or firmware but mainly how bad the security of their routers are. In general consumer router security isnt good but dlink's one is worse including the blunders they made with their keys and the secret admin accounts, backdoors, remote admin enabled on default, security vulnerabilities are things i really dont appreciate. D-link being a brand that offers an alternative to ISP distributed routers doesnt do any better than them.

Since no one, including me, answered the question and this has turned into a D-Link sucks thread, which is OT, I'm closing this.
