Agreed that it's a bad habit - but in a household with a wife and kids where the internet should just work for everyone, it's sometimes much easier to stick with what works rather than suffer the headaches otherwise
I have until very recently hit the 87U with every new firmware but it hasn't always worked out well so I'm looking for quite a few changes before I do a load because besides adding in issues you tend to have to do a clean reboot every time which is a PITA. I know they don't include every fix, they do however tend to include major fixes which I suspect the battery drain would come under plus as stated by someone it has improved but it hasn't gone yet which at best means it is work in progress.

I find that there is usually a way to do both. Have the best performing, secured and current router firmware with minimal downtime for users.
But getting a peep out of them (occasionally) is not an excuse or reason to not keep pursuing the 'better'.

Not for nothing but ASUS has had their nose bloodied by the 87. If there is no possible way to really fix this they really should step up and not stick the customer in their shorts. Its the manufacturers responsibility to make things right. If they really cared for the customer they would do a recall on these routers.
There are couple of ways they can do this one is to offer a version 2 if they can replace the problem chip and ship users refurb units. They could straight up replace them with 88u. I don't even think users would mind paying the difference in price to get an 88u replacement. They have to do users a solid it will cost them money short term but in the long run will make them money keeping people brand loyal. They could disable the 5ghz on the router and resell as 2.4 ghz only cheap routers to recoup some loss.

I have reverted back to my RT-N66U untill this new SDK (Firmware) has been released, I have high hopes for this RT-87U and i hope ASUS put out a very good Beta/Release the next time round, all this bug hunting on 378**** is pointless and time wasting. Once the Quantenna Firmware has been debugged and some quality coding put it the router will be a beast .

I have the 87u with 380.57 and I have no issues whatsoever with the 5ghz
I use the 5ghz on ipad and surface and it works great.
I have my android phone and iphone on 2.4ghz and they work great.
I had the 66u and the 87u is just as stable.
I don't understand why people want to junk their 87u because of an android phone on 5ghz draining battery.
who cares. put it on 2.4 ghz and end your problems

Yes, my android devices works on 2.4 GHz, but why I have to pay a lot of money for this router and 5Ghz band to had issue with my devices? Is this my mistake to pay 200 Eur for something that doesn't work..

Spoke with local Asus office they said that warranty doesnt cover software issues even if the router doesnt work because of it.They are not gonna accept any device unless their HQ release a product recall.

Dude you can pay 2 thousand dollars for a router from Cisco and you will still have problems.
The U87 you bought is a great router. Best one out there for what you get for your money.
Stop complaining and enjoy the router.
You don't need 5 ghz for an android phone.
My opinion is that its not the routers fault its androids fault. why dont other phones do the same thing. My iPhone doesn't. My Microsoft lumina doesn't.

not to many people do from their phone!
Do like everyone else and wait for updates because at the price that we are paying for such amazing technology and having Merlin personally make great firmware's and giving support like he does where else are you going to get that?
I would suggest you flash Merlin firmware on your Router as I have you may like it better

You have some opinion and it's ok, but I want I pay some money for something to work. Also I've already using Merlin firmware. For this reason I bought Asus, I'm not buying Asus to use it with stock firmware. If I don't option to use Merlin firmware I will choose other brand. Asus should be greatful to Merlin that a lot of people buying this products just only for him.

I wouldn't get rid of a router like that for such a small inconvenience that has quick fix by switching to 2.4
I understand its frustrating when you pay for a router that has problems

everything is overpriced my friend including the food you eat
the need is why we pay
and we need routers
my opinion is that the u87 is a great router that does what its suppose to at least for the majority of people who use it
