With a 2x2 AC class wireless chip, it should do more.

I think you were much too close to the router to achieve the maximum performance possible.

Is it better if you give it some room to breathe between the laptop and the router?

Did you try different channels?
No, it doesn't matter where I am, I get the same speed.

I just looked at my wi-fi settings on the laptop and it says that it's an intel dual band wireless-N 7260 so it's not even AC. Regardless of that, like I said, I tried it connected to my router wired and still get about 170.

That's pretty much what you are expected to get out of a 802.11n 2x2 adapter.
