    Cable Modem through a switch?

My biggest concern is having the cable modem exposed to the internal network. why? Could people have physical access to it? Cause i'd just plug my laptop into it and do whatever and in 3 minutes be gone....

    Small Business Help. 6-10 employees

Got rid of their linux domain controller What'd you replace it with? SBS or Standard? Created a 5 day mirror back up on the this server for files from the NAS so this keeps the last 5 days of files in case they mistakenly delete or overwrite a copy of their work. You should be using off site...

Router with VLAN capable WAN port?

I don't get what you're asking.... routers segregate LAN's. If you want to pass through all data and have the router do nothing then why have the router?

Belkin n750db - degraded performance over time?

I'd give it a try. you're talking about 20 minutes to install tomato then another 15 maybe to put the manufacturer firmware back on there maybe. I'd be shocked if the entire process from stock to 3rd party back to default took an hour. guess it's all in how much tinkering you want to do

Belkin n750db - degraded performance over time?

Here's the obligatory "upgrade your firmware" post. If not rock DD-WRT or Tomato and see what happens. Routers are like cars - they don't build them like they use to.

    Network attached cd/dvd drive

any media is untrustworthy so having https really doesn't do anything if you run said untrusted program on your computer and it's compromised. most blu-rays have network capability but why not just share a cd/dvd rom from a PC that has a good security solution that automatically scans...

    Two NICs and VPN appliance

It's certainly possible but you'd have to add static routes to push the traffic through the VPN for whatever IP's you need to hit. It's manual work but at that point your going to have 2 gateways so static routes are really the only way to go.

    DIY VMWare Server

did you contact sun? :) always go to the manufacturer for these things. Unless budget is a concern then rig it.

    Switch: slow download

force the port to 1000/full or whatever and then do the same for the switch port. Auto-negotiate can blow at times.

do small businesses require multiple routers?

That really depends on the business. You have to think in terms of throughput and what you need to run. Do the clients need a lot of bandwidth? Are they just going to random websites for whatever? Do they need to pull lots of data? I worked in health care for years and we had to have high...

How many wireless clients do routers support?

I also have a wgrt54g running Tomato and/or stock and have never had any issues connecting 10+ clients

How many wireless clients do routers support?

updated location 2 to a cisco 4200 and all issues went away. All clients can connect no issues even when hammering connection. Before was only if client connected, never even had to access Internet. Location 1 is cheap and "will deal with it" Going to location 3 this weekend to get the...

Samsung Raid 5 replacement HDD suggestions?

You always want to go at least to the smallest size and speed, not ANY smaller. After that it doesn't matter. Raid will always default to the smallest size/speed. Just make sure the HD will connect to your raid controller. As far as if a disk fails, always read the documentation as many...

How many wireless clients do routers support?

Thanks Tim - if that's the case then some of these crappy or older products simply can't support more than 5 or 6 devices. I just find it odd that I had these random incidents because it seems obvious to me that it was simply max number of clients after all my troubleshooting yet no...

Auto Negotiaiton fails, related to cable?

seems like you know your answer already. There could be a cracked wire in one of the pairs. Typically you have more wattage running through a wire when going from say 100MB to 1000MB (although small, it exists) so it could be that minor threshold. Circuits of POTS typically burn out...

how to measure router WAN to LAN latency

Force NIC I would also force your NIC link speed and WAN link speed to match. Auto-negotiate can act funny sometimes. Typically one of the first things I do when troubleshooting network latency. Gotta start with the basics right?

Windows Server Alternatives for small business

Sbs SBS is o.k. if they don't plan on expanding. It's simple to use (all MS servers are) and doesn't require overhead. However, if they plan on expanding then i'd go with 2008 Standard. To me there's not much of a difference between standard and SBS except that SBS is much more limited...

How many wireless clients do routers support?

Responses @ stevech These are 3 separate locations that happened about 2 months from each other with all 3 having nothing to do with the other. @ overdrive It is certainly not a DHCP issue, even when I forced static IP's it did the same thing. Plus, that's rookie stuff homeboy. :) @ TH...

Windows Server Alternatives for small business

Stick with it FreeBSD is an awful idea. Good luck getting support for a small business there. SBS is not difficult to use and does not require much IT support at all. If you want any info on how to solve a problem google it or go to technet.com. If you can read and then type you can work...

How many wireless clients do routers support?

I've recently been in 3 locations where once a certain number of clients access a wireless router (not bridged, not strictly AP) another client gets disconnected from the network. This seems to be happening more and more. Location 1: Linksys wrt110 HW - 1 PC Wireless - 2 Droids...
