    Site Survey help please

The overlapping channel is an issue depending on the SNR: https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2055709 That is to say if it's distant and it's signal is at least 29dB below the signal from your AP you're fine. As for ripple effect, it can mean anything. It's when one thing causes you...

    Replacing a Laptop's Built-in WiFi Adapter

I said nothing about two signals? So I dunno where you got that from. As said, swapping the card is easy on most laptops. It's the first thing I do with a cheap laptop once I test it and verify it's working. The laptop I got last fall (an Asus Black Friday special) however took about two...

    Replacing a Laptop's Built-in WiFi Adapter

Why would you do that? Granted, the overhead of USB isn't as big of deal as it once was, but it's still a much clunkier solution. If you wanted to add, say, dual-band/dual-stream (since most cheap laptops are single-band/single-stream) then replace the internal Wi-Fi adapter, don't use a USB one!

Which access point to create Tomato WLAN (seamless) roaming?

You aren't doing seamless roaming. BTW, I agree with the OP - using multiple SSIDs is my idea of insanity. It's not user-friendly, it doesn't work well, and it's annoying as can be. Here's how to prove you're not doing seamless roaming. Start up a VoIP app on your phone and make a call. Walk...

    Finding client mac address,

I agree with you regarding WPA, but not WEP. WEP is just so easy to crack it's not even funny - it's similar in difficulty to spoofing a MAC address. Anyways, what we think doesn't matter - I'm not going to use WPA mixed mode for my clients simply because I'm not going to disable 802.11n...

Wifi for older 7,000 sq. ft. home

Sounds good, I wouldn't use the 110 blocks for Ethernet though (as Tim said). I STRONGLY recommend using PoE in a guest environment. It will make your life MUCH easier down the road - no plugs to get randomly unplugged by guests! PoE isn't just about making cabling easier - it's also a nice...

Best Wireless Routers to use as Client Bridge?

I haven't used the N66U so I don't know what it offers. WDS-Repeater halves the bandwidth and causes other issues. WDS-AP to WDS-STA does not, it merely makes it a layer 2 instead of a layer 3 trunk (what you need).

    Finding client mac address,

Yes, fully 802.11n compliant clients and access points will refuse to operate in 802.11n mode unless the network is either: - Unencrypted - WPA2-only (no WPA or WPA/WPA2 mixed mode), AES-only (no TKIP or TKIP/AES mixed mode) This is to discourage use of broken encryption schemes and to break...

unable to solve wifi issues...please help

Well get off of channel 7 (and I really think you should use the same SSID/security everywhere it makes things much easier for your users!). Use 1,6,11 or 1,5,9,13 (outside NA) only. Also, it looks like it's in 40 MHz mode! Make sure everything is locked to 20 MHz ONLY in the 2.4 GHz band. And...

    Finding client mac address,

Remember steve, even if you don't care about security (and honestly, WEP is no different security-wise from MAC filtering), using WEP or WPA will lock out 802.11n rates on modern hardware.

Looking for a good AP with good signal

This is true, but I don't agree with the hardline stance of "higher power is useless" - it will help improve the downstream rate, which makes the usable distance greater. Will it help absolute distance? NO. Will turning it up too high only cause interference? YES. Will it make bad spots usable...

unable to solve wifi issues...please help

The levels look much stronger than a wireless mouse. You see that big swath from 2417 to 2452? Upon closer examination, that looks like a 40 MHz 802.11 channel pair on channel 7 that's seeing fairly high utilization. HUNT THEM DOWN. Sadly, if they're your neighbours there's just nothing you can...

unable to solve wifi issues...please help

Definitely looks to me like you have some non-802.11 interfering signal (or 802.11 on non-1,6,11 channels)

    Finding client mac address,

And WEP is cracked in seconds. Same thing. Need to use WPA2-AES

Perhaps I am being stupid...802.11ac questions

I have no idea, but just a guess, does InSSIDer know about 802.11ac yet? It's possibly reporting 450mbps as the max since it's 3 spatial streams, it doesn't know 802.11AC allows more channels bonded. Just a thought, I don't use InSSIDer.

unable to solve wifi issues...please help

But he doesn't state how the wired network is connected, and he states that wired clients have no issues. Thus, his wired network seems to be fine. There are plenty of routers that can easily handle DHCP and DNS for 50 users. Heck, that's less load than actually routing those 50 users...

    wireless access point config

It'd be better to filter the network, not just the Wi-Fi, to restrict those MAC's. Then the AP will be mostly plug and play (you can even set most AP's to configure themselves with DHCP).

unable to solve wifi issues...please help

Ubiquiti isn't enterprise grade. EVERYTHING SHOULD BE THE SAME SSID/SECURITY. One of the biggest issues is people select the wrong AP for them causing them to connect at quite a distance and slow everyone on the AP. Here's what I'd do though I think you may have an interference issue (see the...

Wifi for older 7,000 sq. ft. home

    1. Because the non-wireless router is better for the money, you can get the wireless version, but I'd keep all the same AP. The switch is needed either way since it's providing PoE (power-over-Ethernet) so no power is needed for the other four access points. 2. Seamless? Nope. 802.11 doesn't...

Wifi for older 7,000 sq. ft. home

I'd use five EnGenius EAP-600 access points connected to a cheap PoE switch (TrendNet makes one that's $55) - this will put power on your Ethernet lines and make this install easy-peasy. Most cheap switches are only 4 port so the one in your network closet won't be PoE probably. Set all the...
