Best external drive for the Asuswrt-Merlin router

I have this one plugged into a N66U for an year already: Seagate Expansion 2TB, 3.5inch, 7200rpm, 32MB, USB 3.0 It's working OK. I've tried a Samsung Story Station but isn't working normal.

[How-to] Adblock Plus filters right on router

Thank you Александр for this tip, now I'm using Privoxy as proxy under wireless settings (is available in either Android and IOS). The proxy is specified for every connection (AP). No need to configure proxy in browser and no iptables rule is required.

script to unmount and remount HD

So, your /dev/sda1 is mounted on /tmp/mnt/HD but isn't shown by df command. This mean that FileSystem is corrupted. Unmount it and run fsck: # e2fsck -fv /dev/sda1 Will take some time to finish. After that mount it again and check it.

script to unmount and remount HD

Probably your HDD isn't anymore /dev/sda. Check this with: # fdisk -l To avoid this kind of problems (device name change), you can use UUID to mount the partitions. UUIDs are always unique. To find a UUID of your partitions do: # blkid Should look something like this: # blkid...

    Unresponsive RT-N66U

γειά σου, For this kind of issues it's a good idea to activate the swap. Even if your router runs out of physical memory it will not become unresponsive. Anyway, try to ping it when this happens. My memory usage: total used free shared...

USB hard drive stop working after long time no use

Try to use any cheap USB hub. Between router and drive, with no other USB devices plugged.

    Wol page corruped

Probably you need to reset also the nvram settings.

Can I install this firmware over Tomato?

Yes, you can. Just enter router’s built in recovery WebUI, use Reset NVRAM defaults and after that just load your preferred FW. Do that by holding down the reset button while powering up the router, wait until the power led is blinking slowly, then release the reset button. Set your NIC card...

    Asuswrt-Merlin 3.0.0.4.270.24 is out

Mkfs command also needs some swap space to complete on large drives, not only fsck. Merlin, if you add the badblocks tool our drives will thank you, as we are doing too...

No. You have no reason to do that.

    USB hub on the RT-N66U

I must to admit that was only one USB device connected thru the USB hub, with his own power supply.

    USB hub on the RT-N66U

I've used some time ago an USB hub to connect an USB drive to the RT-N66U, because otherwise the spin-down feature doesn't worked. But with Merlin FWs is not needed anymore.

    Setting up Transmission through Entware

Indeed, any drive having a label will be mounted under /tmp/mnt/<LABEL>. Even if it's an Ext2/3. /dev/sda2 on /tmp/mnt/Seagate2TB type ext3 (rw,nodev, noatime, data=ordered) Thanks @ryzhov_al for explaining why. Maybe this will replace the current way of "always mount in the same...

Effects of adding functions to the router?

IMO even under heavy load the basic functions are working like usual. But any file transfer will slow down another file transfers. Use top command and watch the I/O wait (% io).

    fstab - custom

Swap is indeed a very useful feature, especially when you are transferring large quantities of data, like me. :D Usually you will use a whole partition of a hard disk for swapping. However, with the 2.6 Linux kernel, swap files are almost as fast as swap partitions, although I recommend using...

    fstab - custom

Nice work, mmmmmm! But you can also use the fstab file from /jffs/config/, writting in it: UUID=c6062286-5f15-4aaa-a142-580f9441ce92 /tmp/mnt/sda1 ext2 rw,nodev, noatime 0 0 UUID=01CCAADD89839CA0 /tmp/mnt/samsungo ufsd...
