"best" consumer router, Asus AC68U sucks, or is it just me? (crappy signal distances

I have tried all the firmwares. Go to DDWRT - You won't be sorry. I have switched months ago and have been pleased ever since!

266 firmware much better signal strength

I told you!!!!! Merlin does not have a 266 version. Merlin's 266 version uses the driver from 220 firmware if I am correct. I have been using Asus 266 version for a good while now with no issues, great speed and the strongest signals possible. AND with 266, if you adjust the...

266 firmware much better signal strength

That is correct on both counts. Try it and see what you think. Use InSSider to verify signal strength. Let us know what you experience.

266 firmware much better signal strength

Oh, just FYI, Merlin's 3.0.0.4.266.23b-dw.zip: Does not use the actual 266 driver. He told me he still uses the 220 driver his his 3.0.0.4.266.23b-dw.zip So, If you want to try the 266 driver, make sure to use the ASUS original 266 driver and then report your results.

266 firmware much better signal strength

That may be true. But I can positively say that I have had zero issues with 266, and it has much better output and signal strength. I have been using 266 now for a month with no lockups, no loss connections, and have been having great throughput. THis is why I highly recommend people to...

266 firmware much better signal strength

I guarantee anyone to try the 266 firmware, and you will see a 10% increase in signal strength at the minimum on both 2.4 and 5.0 and the mw adjustment on 266 actually works, where all other firmwares it does not make any difference.

You can get the version 266 here: http://www.gohighvoltage.com/forum/threads/23904-Asus-RT-AC66U-Firmware-266?p=23960

    ASUS RT-AC66U 3.0.0.4.354 Official Firmware

That is exactly why I will not use anything but firmware 266. IT has been the best so far with a very big signal strength over all the other firmwares.

    ASUS RT-AC66U 3.0.0.4.354 Official Firmware

What I find even more odd, when I was emailing Asus tech support back and forth and showed them that firmware 266 was much stronger signal at 80mw then the newer 270, and the 266's power was noticeable adjustable raising the MW, they removed 266 from the website. I think they know it was...

    ASUS RT-AC66U 3.0.0.4.354 Official Firmware

Very odd, As soon as I installed this new software, my 5ghz signal strength to my bridge across my home dropped 10% instantly. Switched back to 266 firmware and gained the 10% back. For some reason, Asus is cutting the power back on new firmware over 266.

    RT-AC66U - Disappointing so far...

I started out with commodore 64, then 128, then I got a PC, and I was running Wildcat BBS with mult-windows with Qemm desqview I believe it was.. LOL.

    RT-AC66U - Disappointing so far...

That is hilarious, brings back many memories. When I was a kid I had my own BBS, with 3 nodes, and in the later stages of my BBS I had those exact MODEMS!! 300 baud, then 1200 baud, then 2400 baud (us robotics), and then 9600 and then 14.4!!! WOW!

9db upgrade antennas on ebay - worth it?

These antennas are not made for dual band. YOu can damage your 5ghz transmitter using these.

9db upgrade antennas on ebay - worth it?

I much prefer that a router have external, removeable antennas. Routers with external antennas always seem to have better range and you can adjust them to meet your needs. Problem is, the replacement antennas are junk and not matched to the router/transmitter.

9db upgrade antennas on ebay - worth it?

I tried the Asus ones too, even the Asus Directional one. No difference. Stock was better.

9db upgrade antennas on ebay - worth it?

That is exactly what I experienced. All antennas I tried were worse then the stock ones!!

266 firmware much better signal strength

Tech Support emailed me and said they are aware and confirmed the Signal Strength issues, as well as 2.4ghz performance issues in 270. They said it will be addressed and fixed in the next firmware update, and he recommended I continue to use 266.

9db upgrade antennas on ebay - worth it?

Hey! Can you tell me how they end up working? Funny, I have those cameras too, they have awful range for wireless.

266 firmware much better signal strength

I emailed the tech I am working with and asked him where it went, and bam its back! LOL

266 firmware much better signal strength

I bet you they did pull it because I have been working with tech support on issues with 270. 260 firmware, ABSOLUTELY had control over transmit power, I could verify this definitely. 270 makes no difference when you adjust mw power.
