Some advice please, my setup is: Media Streamer -> Network Switch -> NAS ...............all hard cabled by CAT6A this works fine, however if I introduce an access point/switch between the streamer and switch: Media Streamer -> AP/Switch -> Network Switch -> NAS ............again all hard...

[SOLVED] Terminating cable to keystone and other end to RJ45

I'm trying to run a cat6 from a wall panel keystone on one (X) side and an RJ45 (Y) on the other to connect to an IP camera. All connected correctly via the 568-B Wiring wiring method, however when I test with a LAN cable tester nothing is working?? Into the testing tool I'm connecting the...

    Ideal router placement?

So the advice I have read seems to suggest as high up as possible and in a central location, given my rooms are separated by walls, would it be therefore logical for me to place my router in the loft in a central location over all the rooms? I live in the UK, so in theory temperatures...

Swapped over 2 APs, now cannot connect to either!

I have 2 APs (converted D-Link Dir-655 routers) connected to my main router via seperate homeplug. One of them has been working poorly for the past few days, so I swapped them over and changed their respective IP addresses around. Following this I cannot connect to either wirelessly?! I can...

    Multiple or single cable run?

I'm thinking about running some cat6 from my office to my bedroom and living room, to do away with the homeplugs. As redecorating is not an option, I'm thinking of running it around the side and back of the house. Now all my equipment in both the Bedroom and living room are grouped together...

Where to implement Link Aggregation (LAG)

So I have successfully implemented LAG between my NAS and attached switch, now if I were to connect that switch to another switch (which connects to my network streamer), do I need to implement/passthrough the LAG link on the other switch also? bit confused

    Replacement Router

I run a home network with a router and 2 separate access points (all are DLink Dir-655), these are connected via HomePlugs and service approximately 25 wired IP and 15 wireless devices in total. One of the APs services a network streamer for HD movies, this connected to my main router (via...

Are pass through home plugs preferable?

From a purely technical perspective. If you have a large number of electrical devices connected to a power strip, would they benefit from going via a pass through homeplug? Would this in any way help filter noise? (This is the claim and recommendation in the instructions of the Netgear...

Much slower network speeds on laptop

I have using LAN_Speedtest to run some tests between my various computers. I had some good results across my i7 desktop to NAS, connected to the same router: 661Mbps Write, 280Mbps Read But comparatively poor results with my laptop to NAS, connected to same router: 82 Mbps Write...

    HomePlug AV2 Head-To-Head

Great Article Tim, the website gets better all the time and is one of my favorite resources. It's a shame these HomePlug manufacturers aren't as flamboyant with their technical specifications as they are with their marketing! Question for you: Were the results for these AV2 SISO adapters...

    5GHz not stable?

I'm having issues connecting my RT-N66U to my laptop over 5GHz. The laptop is located about 1 metre from the router. It works fine initially, but intermittently disconnects and then won't reconnect. Both the router and and laptop are set to auto 20/40... Any ideas?

Do router limitations apply if used as an AP?

For example: I know the Asus rt-n56u had/has limitations with VPN pass through, would these still apply if it were being used as an AP? Connected users would be using the AP to connect to a router which does allow VPN pass through?

Adding a wireless access point - why assign IP outside DHCP range?

Sorry if this is a silly question.. As per the title, when adding a wireless access point, why is the recommendation to assign it an IP address outside of the DHCP range. Why not just assign an IP within the DHCP range and reserve it for the access point within the router settings? Thanks
