RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

I did a hard reset (WPS plus power button). Doesn't seem to make any difference. When I wire my Shield TV to the 1GB wan port it shows 100mbps. On any other port it registers a gig. So I think that settles that. The 1 gig WAN port was partially toasted, and demoted to fast...

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

I'll do that and report back. Would nice to make the router "whole" again. On the upside, I can always dedicate my WAN port to an IoT device if it's forever stuck at fast ethernet.

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

I did that as part of my troubleshooting before posting here. Went back to ASUS firmware from Merlin and did a full reset. No change to the Wan port. The one thing I was missing was simply looking at the status of the WAN port on the ASUS page which clearly said 100mbps.

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

I ordered it March of last year...so probably out of warranty either way. And no I would not. I can't be SURE it's related to the strike...I only checked the speed after they provisioned the new modem. I do not check it that often. For all I know it's been that way for a while and I only...

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

Well then. I may wire one of my gig devices to it and see if they get limited to fast ethernet. That would further confirm if the port is smoked. Right?

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

Good tip. I think they're as expected. I turned everything on--Xbox Series X (Gb), Shield TV (Gb), Hue Sync bridge (fast ethernet...never thought about it but I bet that's right), and the last one is an LG TV that I had wired...I just unwired it as I don't use any of its smart features anyway...

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

It's a thought but I don't run QoS. Never really had a need for it. Thank you for the suggestion.

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

It wasn't intermittent at all. It was consistently maxing out in the 90-94bps range. I'm thinking it got smoked when the modem attached to it got smoked (by lightning). I guess I'm thankful I have a "spare" wan port on this thing. The added expense paid off! Thank you kindly for the help...

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

Nailed it. I did swap out cables (three different ones on the 1gb wan port, which upon inspection is clean and dust free) but it turns out it works fine on the 2.5 port. Any downside to using this port? On Thursday night, lightning struck, pretty close to my house. Immediately lost wifi...

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

I can try the 2.5 (do I have to change a setting for that or just swap the cable?). I did try a different cable. Edit: It does say 100mbps for my WAN port. Why would it be doing that?

RESOLVED (Smoked 1gb WAN port) I'm stumped--slow Modem to Router speeds RT-AX86U

Ok I have an issue that's got me at the end of my rope. My only other option as I see it is replacing the router, but I thought I'd ask here first as I have an RT-AX86U that isn't very old. Here's the scenario: 1) I had a lightning strike that blew out the Spectrum modem. No power light...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

Just randomly checked: 60 days of flawless uptime on my AX86u running Merlin. No need to reboot without releases! Glad to hear things are flowing again.

    RT-AX86 Series

Little late to the party here but it looks like the 86s has supplanted the 86u at this price point, and sells at the same 250 bucks right now on Amazon that I paid them for the 86u back in March of this year. It's also readily available at this price point at Best Buy. But the 86u is not. I...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

After 38 days of uptime on 386.2_6 I did a dirty upgrade. I'm not sure what happened but it started broadcasting the two default Asus WIFI IDs. And took me to the "new router setup" page. I entered my old Wifi information and it started working again. Oddly it didn't ask me to change my...

    Solid Upgrade for Netgear Router?

With cars, the answer is always a Miata. To answer your question, I have the RT-AX86U, it's 250 if you can find it, and it seems to be the current darling of this forum. I've had no issues with mine. Fast, good coverage, stable.

Should I get the ASUS RT-AC86U or ASUS RT-AX86U

I got the AX86U at MSRP of 250 on Amazon. It may take a little patience. But you do not have to spend 400. It's a bad time to buy anything built on semiconductors right now.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 is now available

Yes, and afterwards the icon list is expanded to mirror the mobile app. Which is nice because there are more appropriate icons out there now. At least on the x86u.

    What happened to RT-AX86u?

It's anything that needs chips. The PS5 and XBOX Series X would have been readily available by now in normal circumstances and they are still nowhere to be found. I got lucky getting the AX86u--and I basically paid MSRP at 250.

    New Router Time

Most popular option would be RT-AC86U It's above your budget but probably worth it to be sure you get the performance you desire. You'll get Merlin support and the external antennas you require.

Aging Asus 3100 not cutting it anymore

Router has been up for 10 days and 7 hours at this point, according to the system log. I do think there is something to a "slow death" of routers. I had my AC3100 on a laptop fan for years...and it did help the temps. I took it off at some point because it started making noise. Coincidence...
