Networking between buildings - Cat6 vs Fiber Optics

As a general rule, I never run copper data cabling between buildings. Fiber optic cables don't care about voltage differentials between the buildings and grounding and if protected properly will give you a very reliable connection. The media converter you have listed will require an SFP module...

Home office network - planning. Please critique and help refine it

That's some of what I used to set mine up, very useful site. The reason I asked about the requirement for remote DVR management and on screen Caller-ID is because that option doesn't support it. I am doing more like the 3 router setup listed on that page.

Home office network - planning. Please critique and help refine it

Good choice. I have had FiOS for a couple of years and it's been mostly rock solid, way better than cable internet. I know this pain well. This shouldn't be too complicated to do. This is where it gets tricky, if you want to continue to use the FiOS router, you will need an intermediate...

    Reliable non-limiting solution?

I have been running a Sophos (virtual machine) for around or so and have had no real issues with it (that weren't caused by me doing stupid things on the ESX host). It does support VPN termination and works pretty well. I've done speed tests (internal gig connected hosts) and it's managed to...

    Dual WAN Advice Please

A routed link doesn't join the networks and it has the same set up he's got now. It allows two autonomous networks to be able to use the high speed gigabit private line to communicate. You assumed that the ISP is the same for both but even if that is the case, the likelyhood that they would be...

    Dual WAN Advice Please

How were you planning on keeping remote connectivity between the buildings?

    Dual WAN Advice Please

Not the same solution at all. The one I posted only requires one ISP connection per building, but allows for failover via IP SLA tracking and HSRP prioritizing. The solution you seem to have provided would probably work for outbound connections, but would be likely result in suboptimal...

    Manuel Kasper shutters m0n0wall project

Thanks for your work on the project! I actually run a m0n0wall system as a virtual machine to bridge my FiOS router and internal network (to keep things like video on demand, on screen caller ID and TV Guide). I don't expect that I'll have to update it, it's been amazingly stable. If I do end...

    Dual WAN Advice Please

If you can find a couple cheap Cisco ISR platforms (1800s series would work great and can be found somewhat inexpensively CLICKY ), you can use HSRP (hot router standby protocol) and accomplish outbound connectivity fairly easily. I will try to draw up a diagram for it. I would highly suggest...

    Dual WAN Advice Please

Depending on your service level, you may only have 1 IP address for each ISP link so you would only have one gateway. Good plan going to fiber, running copper between buildings is almost never a good idea. What kind of time/money/resources are you willing to commit to this project?

Constant WAN reconnects every other minute (VERIZON FIOS)

With nothing else going on in your network and your computer directly wired to the Verizon modem, start a constant ping to 192.168.1.1. Let that run for as long as you need to verify the modem is staying up. It looks like the WAN is falling off on the modem and I can't remember if it's true...

Isolating problems in a Business LAN.

Are all of the lights blinking like crazy on the switch when it happens? Instead of throwing a new switch on it, try running wire shark and seeing what the network is doing. It's possible you have a looped connection, someone is streaming a ton of stuff, misconfigured/defective device, bad...

Constant WAN reconnects every other minute (VERIZON FIOS)

+1. That's exactly what I would do. As a matter of fact, the only reason I use my coax modem now is for video on demand, all traffic traverses a different firewall/router now (and it's MUCH more stable than that Actiontec was)

    RasPi NAS build - Anyone?

They're releasing a new Pi today that has a quad core 900Mhz chip with a gig of ram. http://www.cnet.com/news/raspberry-pi-2-model-b-is-a-quad-core-upgrade-on-sale-today/ Not saying I would use it as a NAS, but it's gotta be much better than a B+ or so.

    Discrepancies in Internet Speed Tests

I've never known any ISP to say that you will get your advertised speeds outside of their networks. That being said, it might be worth calling, but chances are, there's not much they're going to do.

Question about setting PVIDs in 2-switch network

Usually you use the same VLAN ID on both switches with a dot1q trunk inbetween. The distant switch receives the frame with the tag on it and forwards it to that VLAN after stripping the tag off. If your router doesn't support vlans or dot1q sub interfaces, then it most likely won't be able to...

Used 3Com switch - no IP?

I have had some success with creating a static ARP entry in my computer and using that IP to communicate with the device (since it's on the same subnet, the IP is irrelevant as the computer will send it to the MAC that I specified. Kind of a pain in the butt way to do it, but in a pinch, it's...

    Dumb remote security question

I don't know of any company in their right minds (or people for that matter) that allow access to internal files without a VPN. Ideally you'd have two factor authentication for the VPN. The internet can be a scary place and there are always holes being found. Look up Shell Shocking... that...

    Dumb remote security question

SSL will help prevent someone from capturing your traffic between the two devices (including passwords and usernames). It will NOT help prevent a hacker from attacking your system and gaining access due to weak passwords or intrusion prevention methods.

    Radius support

Cisco ASA's are capable of doing that. I use them to authenticate VPN's via TACACS but they can also do RADIUS. What's your budget?
