How Much Total Throughput Can Your Wi-Fi Router Really Provide?

Thanks for doing this. Glad you are back helping us all understand the realities of the market. Your concise and thoughtful insights for me are the best I read, making sense of what vendors claim and what really works.

Open Mesh A40 & A60 Access Points Reviewed

What does "depending on a cloud service for management" mean exactly? Will the units continue to function as configured if connectivity to the cloud/internet is lost, or do they cease to function in their entirety (e.g. eero)?

    eero Announces Its Next Generation

Got the original Eero units back when they were crowdfunded. Lived with them for over a year before switching to Orbi. While the Eero was reasonably fast, reliable and simple to set up it has an Achilles heal. Eero must have internet connectivity in order to provide WiFi in the home. For most...

    Untangle at Home Reviewed

Been running Untangle on this very box with 4GB and 120SSD for 9 months now. Dropped the Orbi 3Pack from Costco behind it and I now have a locked down home network with fantastic wireless speed and coverage throughout the house. Had a single router met my wireless needs I would have seriously...

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

Also, anyone considering this... make sure you are getting the right tool for the job you're trying to do. Others to consider if you are Mac based are KisMac2 (Free) or what I now use WiFi Explorer (paid - shown below). (Mapping and positioning Router and two satellites)

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

You are correct. Plugged in my "spare" R6900 in the same original location as where the Orbi was causing interference and had the same result. Just bringing this up as folks are more likely to place a satellite somewhere that a router would not normally be found and... you get this interference...

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

Netgear was able to replicate the issue with an Orbi unit 2 feet from a Lutron Switch. I contacted Lutron support and confirmed the switches sensitivity to RF line noise (and they are aware of the issue of WiFi routers or extenders causing this functional anomaly). Their official solution is to...

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

West Springfield MA They also now have it listed on their website: http://www.costco.com/Netgear-Orbi-AC3000-Tri-band-WiFi-System.product.100318832.html

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

No... it was just strictly a proximity issue. The switch is not networked in any way. Straight up interference.

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

AH HA... So for the last 48 hours my Lutron MS-OPS2 occupancy sensing light switch in my bathroom adjacent to where the new upstairs Orbi lives kept turning itself on with no one in the room and staying on. I tried changing the settings, resetting the device and then replaced it and still the...

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

So we all keep referring to this Orbi system as "mesh" but is it really? "Mesh", would imply that every unit can and or would talk to every other unit, but it seems that the satellites sync back to the router (but do they to each other)? Isn't this really a hub and spoke configuration that is...

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

As for multi-satellite support, there were some anomalies in the interface to update the firmware. In the Automatic page, it didn't want to download the firmware to the second satellite. Ended up going to the manual page, did the router first and then the system took it upon itself to update the...

    Netgear Orbi discussion thread

Walking through Costco tonight and there it was... a Netgear Orbi 3-Pack for $499. Put all of the units in the exact same locations as my eero devices and tested from the same laptop in the same location and yup... the Orbi units are faster. More importantly, it stays online when Comcast goes...

    Introducing The 2017 SmallNetBuilder Charts

How come the Netgear Orbi doesn't show up in the Router Charts? Was is not fully tested? Only compared to the other mesh offerings? The reason I ask is... what do I give up in performance if I move from an R7000 to an Orbi. I understand I gain coverage/speed at distance but what about when...

Tim, a thought on a VM test for the TS-x51

pleasantly surprised Actually... using an x51 device with UTM is not awful. As long as you are not trying to do a large file transfer or read from the NAS while using the UTM it is OK (sic). Do both at the same time and it will hit 90% CPU but this is not typical for concurrent use and as a...

Tim, a thought on a VM test for the TS-x51

Wasn't paying attention I didn't realize that the SNB team had done the writeup. I only saw QNAP-Sponsored in dark black when I looked at it... after reading your reply and went back and scanned for the articles author and the only reference I see is in light grey "SNB CC TEAM" so maybe this...

help choosing RAID version for new TS-451

It would depend on the drive size After reading this article: http://www.zdnet.com/article/why-raid-6-stops-working-in-2019/ My rule of thumb is with four disks or 2TB or less, raid5 is ok, any larger a disk 3TB+ you would want to run raid6 Raid 10 in a 4 disk array would would yield the same...

Things that make you go Hmmmm Bart, No problem. And how funny is this? When I went to respond to you, at the top of the SNB page was this: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-howto/32558-how-to-use-a-qnap-nas-as-a-utm AND Its a QNAP sponsored article. I wish they had sponsored me...
