Does alternative firmware break your router?

Great article. Any interest in running the test against pfsense?

WAN stopped working. Tried 5 different routers now, no luck. Works directly though.

Are you power cycling the modem when you try new routers? Modems often mate with the MAC address of the device behind it. If that MAC address changes the connection may fail. A power cycle of both devices should fix that. Would it be possible that the test of the D-link involved a power...

LAN Party How To - Part 1: Planning and Power

Great advice above. I know most venues that regularly have bands and stuff get asked about their power requirements all the time. They should be able to give you a map of all the circuits and which outlets are connected to them.

A Few Questions about Gigabit Ethernet

Cat5e is sufficient for running gigabit speeds. Cat6 is a higher quality (better insulated) standard. Cat6 is not as flexible as cat5e and can be difficult to run in existing walls. If you are running cable in an existing building, I would recommend cat 5e. I use 5e throughout my house...

Diary Of My Switch To Internet TV

I couldn't agree with you more regarding the Roku box. Although I am no longer a Netflix subscriber (couldn't stand the limited library any longer), I do regularly use the Roku to watch Revision 3 and other available programming. The Roku box puts everything else to shame. You can barely tell...

    connecting 2 homes

Higgins is right on... in fact, the NAS boxes you want to connect might be able to do what you want... I installed pptpd on my NAS.. its very easy to configure. The two NAS boxes could have a full time VPN connection.

The Dirty Little Secret of Today's Networks

I was actually very impressed with cell phone coverage during Hurricane Ike here in Houston. We lost power (and cable) very early during the storm, by 9pm I believe. Cell phones remained operational the entire time... by 7am the next morning, the rain was still very strong, I used my cell...

HP Procurve 1400-8G or 3Come Baseline 2816 for server

I also have the 1400-24G. Solid switch.... it does consume about 17W of power though... a bit high for a home switch... just as reference, a netgear 5 port swich (which it replaced) only consumed 2W.

    Smart Switch How To Series

Just wanted to pass along some Kudo's. Articles such as this are the primary reason I visit this site as often as I do. Keep up the good work.

    Smart Switch How To Series

Could you spend some time explaining port trunking? I have a need to bridge two switches together, and would like to use more than one port to connect the two... as the bridge is the current bottleneck of the network.

    Help needed with Wireless Network

DD WRT firmware allows you to wirelessly bridge two routers together. Put the firmware on your linksys router and use the client mode bridged feature.

    Proxy server

Analogx.com has a free (and very tiny) program called Proxy. You run that application on the machine that has internet access, then point the other machines to the "proxy" IP address and they will be able to surf the web, check email, etc. Im using it this week as a hurricane refugee. We...

HELP! How to salvage data from a failed RAID1 setup (Hammer MyShare)

Also, since Small Claims Court is intimidating to most people (it really shouldnt be though), many credit cards offer enhanced and extended warranties from the original manufacturer. You may want to contact the credit card company that you used to purchase the device and see what additional...

HELP! How to salvage data from a failed RAID1 setup (Hammer MyShare)

It's called Small Claims Court, and it only costs you $25 to file a claim. I dont care what policies they have, you have the right to protect your personal data (and in this case retrieve it). If they deny your warranty claim after you have discussed the matter with them, take them to...

HELP! How to salvage data from a failed RAID1 setup (Hammer MyShare)

Don't be so fast to rule this out. You aren't asking for a warranty, you are returning a unit. If they give you a hard time, file a charge back with your credit card.

    Complicated Networking Problem

I have another possible solution. What about buying a single drive NAS and connect it to the router in the kitchen. Set up the two NAS devices to be synronized (or a subset, maybe just music for example). Since performance isn't critical, the two wireless bridges may not be such an issue...
