ASUS N66U and AC68U - Dropping WAN only

I've been having repeated problems with an ASUS RT-N66U dropping the WAN connection intermittently. When it happens, the LAN is not affected: wired and wireless devices can continue to see and communicate with each other just fine. It's gotten so bad that I went out and picked up an AC68U...
