DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Hey gabell, Yes, you will be pleased to know there is working fix for this issue. There are two working solutions: 1. Create a dnsmasq.conf.add file to have the router give the Roku a custom DNS server 2. Use another router (i.e RTN66U/AC68U) and use your LAN as a "WAN". While DNS Filter...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

hmmm. Well i'm not sure where this leaves me. Surely there must be a way to force 1 or 2 clients to use unblock us DNS and the rest to use Google DNS from the router. I do have another rtn66u that isnt being used. Would this be of any use? i.e put the Roku behind that, set it up to block...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

But if so, then wouldn't forcing the Netflix client to the unlockus service have the same effect? For instance routing the hardcoded Google DNS to a black hole will force the Netflix client (ie the Roku) to fall back to the router's DNS vis DHCP - which has the unlockus DNS service set on the...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

I disable DNS Filtering entirely via the GUI and LAN DNS is set to 10.0.0.1 thus ensuring all LAN clients query dnsmasq for a DNS server from the ac68u (I assume my understanding is correct here). All clients hence get 10.0.0.1 as DNS via DHCP (also from the ac68u), which is the router and its...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

123.123.123.123 is an example DNS - the actual IP I have hidden. This is what I want the Roku DNS to redirect to. It half works. You would think from the router's perspective that if it is redirecting any DNS requests from the Roku and changing it to 123.123.123.123 everything would be fine...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Hey mstombs, Sure thing - here is what iptables show with DNS Filtering enabled and set to redirect DNS for the Roku to 123.123.123.123 *actual IP changed for security reasons LAN address 10.0.0.0/24 DNS set in WAN - 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 10.0.0.X - has the correct IP for another computer on the...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Awesome, thanks RMerlin. Ok so having all the gear now to test all of this I have run into an issue. Objective Recap: Have all LAN clients use Google DNS (handed out via RTAC68U DHCP) besides specific devices forced to another DNS server at the router level – e.g. 123.123.123.123. I have...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Ok, so I finally had to chance to test this out today via my PC. It is very simple to get working. Here are my findings: To have 1 or more devices be forced to a DNS server of choice regardless of what DNS settings clients are configured to use: 1. Turn on DNS-Based Filtering 2. Set Global...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Are you saying there is a bug in the GUI when "Global Filter Mode: Router" is selected? And thus a workaround is to set "Global Filter Mode" to "Custom 1", and "Custom 1" to the router's IP, thus creating the same effect that selecting "Global Filter Mode: Router" would have if it worked correctly?

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Well thats good :) Got to the bottom of this. I will try this early next week. I'm finding it hard to understand how that works still! haha. I have two assumptions here: Assumption 1: In order to force the router to redirect client DNS settings as per the "Client List" you have to set...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Good information there Colin. Good to know. Ok - in order to force 1 client to use a certain DNS server (on the internet) regardless of the client’s DNS settings and leave all other devices on the LAN using Google's DNS servers at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 we need: 1. Set “WAN” > “WAN DNS...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

I see. So, If I want all devices to get DNS via DHCP from the router (I have it set manually to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) WAN page > “WAN DNS setting”, and I would only want certain devices to have the router force another DNS server as specified on the DNS Filtering page, I would set Global Filter...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I can force DNS to my own servers on specific network clients via the DNS filter option in the GUI. Sounds like just the fix for hardcoded DNS in devices. It’s a tad confusing how the GUI states selecting “No Filtering will disable/bypass the filter…” Sounds...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned this will be for Google Chromecast and possibly a Roku 3. Right so in order to force Google Chromecast/ Roku 3 to use a DNS server of my choice I can ether: 1. Enable JFFS on the ac68u 2. SSH to the router and create dnsmasq.conf.add in the...

DNS redirect for specific hosts on LAN - RT-AC68U - Asuswrt-Merlin

Hi all, I recently installed an Asus RTAC68U router which is loaded with the latest version of Merlin (378.51). I’m kind new to some of this but this is what I want to achieve: I have a device (static, 192.168.1.100) that I want to redirect DNS for. Example, the device has fixed DNS...
