Can't Establish Connection from Device to Outside World

Look under the router settings for Firewall>General>Respond Ping Request from WAN - set to YES, and reboot the router. What modem do you have, and is it bridged or are you behind it's NAT also? What wireless encryption settings are you using? Try to avoid the WPA AES + TKIP setup, some devices...

Slow 5ghz and webbrowsing often stalls at "Waiting for website.com..."

Wireless N vs. AC most likely. Your brother(N), other place(AC)? The test at the other place done on the same computer? What hardware is used in each test?

    Beamforming issues

The MBP likely has the old wireless N Broadcom card. These do not support beamforming, the AC Broadcom cards do support it, and some clients do not play nice with it enabled unless they explicitly support it. The DD-WRT devs talk like it is a problem in the Broadcom drivers on the routers...

OpenVPN clients cannot access LAN hosts

Could the NAS be in standby? Send a WOL packet?

OpenVPN clients cannot access LAN hosts

Some Windows clients will not respond to ping depending on firewall setup. I recall a Win XP Home firewall not responding to ping by default.

Hopefully those of you with knowledge can impart some of it upon me

The new modems rented from Comcast do not come with batteries. Yes, their old Docsis 2 telephony modems like the Motorola did come with a battery. Good to know the store bought modems come with a battery. Comcast must be pulling a fast one with the batteries. Nickel and dime...who doesn't these...

Small network mixed GB and 10/100 NICS

What you describe should not happen. Anything connected to a giga switch should all communicate at that rate. Something is wrong in the connection between router and switch. It helps to give specifics on hardware used. What switch are you using? Also, please only refer to NICs when talking about...

Hopefully those of you with knowledge can impart some of it upon me

The Arris telephony modem doesn't come with a battery btw. The battery is to keep the internet up for a few hours during a power outage for phone use. Comcast used to provide the battery, now they expect you to purchase it if you need the ability to make calls in a power outage. I would suggest...

    airprint through router connected printer

Plug the printer into a computer and install Netgear Genie, it creates a airprint server on the computer. I recall RMerlin saying you can install it via optware. I think the Netgear Genie solution is easier.

Small network mixed GB and 10/100 NICS

Why not do away with using 100Mbit nics, and only use the Gbit nics? Connect Gbit nics to the switch, and then the switch to the router. All traffic behind the switch will be Gbit, so only time it will slow down is to/from the internet. If you must do it your way. Try setting priorities under...

Which router(s) should I be using?

I suggest the Outdoor AP's also, they are cheaper than modern routers using DD-WRT, and are waterproof with PoE support. You could still use your routers and keep bandwidth high by using the outdoor AP's as just bridges and not repeaters, then run the routers as AP for better coverage per house...

Computer hangs when trying to detect network devices

Usb clients tend to be finicky, and I think it has to do with interference on the extension cables they supply with them. Usually a unplug and re-plug takes care of it, but I have found that doing away with the extension cable resolves most of the problems. Windows 8.1 defaults all new networks...

HELP! Very slow wireless speeds with rt-ac66u

The desktop wireless card, is it legacy wireless A or wireless AN? Legacy will max out like ~20Mbps and that is like 15-20ft away with LOS, any further or with obstructions it drops off quite a bit. Should upgrade to AC1200 clients that support beamforming(Broamcom, Realtek chipsets) to gain...

HELP! Very slow wireless speeds with rt-ac66u

Same speed with all clients or just the laptop? Speed test the iPhone's too. How old are the iPhone's? iPhone 4 or newer are wireless N, 4S will test faster than a 4 even though they have same speed wireless radio(My 4 max is 17Mbps, 4S will max out my connection at 28Mbps). The laptop using...

Not getting full bandwith of internet connection on Wireless N

The article, in terms of 2.4GHz N performance, was biased towards the Intel, there wasn't any 2.4GHz "AC era" clients to compare to(the usb client was single stream, so not viable). Your idea of it being the best for 2.4GHz N, based on what comparison? Just other N only clients? That is a fair...

    help with amped wireless repeater.

I'm talking about the access control the click through captive portal controls. *connect now button*, the hotel's access control list... I was saying you could prevent having to repeat the signal twice by just hooking up the laptop to the hotel wifi and use the virtual router to share with...

    help with amped wireless repeater.

Try using wifi virtual router with the laptop if it's Win7 or newer. Have to warn you, it will most likely be slow. It is repeating the signal twice, splitting the speed in half, and then in half again. Couldn't tell ya what the problem is. Could be an access control list not allowing more than...

Help with connection from switch to wireless router

What subnet does the cisco 800 hand out with DHCP? You could put the E3000 on a different subnet and connect it to the internet, then just put the cisco 800 in the E3000's DMZ. Modem-->E3000-->cisco 800 Looks like the cisco 800 series use 10.10.10.0 subnet by default The E3000 uses...

Not getting full bandwith of internet connection on Wireless N

It's important to match up router and client chipsets esp. since Broadcom AC also fully supports beamforming(Realtek and MediaTek clients support it as well). Reason enough for my recommendation. I have to disable beamforming on the router to get decent performance with the 7260(Intel clients...

Not getting full bandwith of internet connection on Wireless N

Look at the Router charts of the AC based routers here at SNB. Mainly their minimum downlink speeds in both bands. Now compare those measurements to your router class. On par with what you're seeing(N) and expecting(AC) heh. Time to upgrade to AC! Just to be clear, the results are from LAN to...
